Down by your clock on the taskbar, there is usually an icon that is for the touchpad. Right-click on it and see if there is a disable or properties. You might have to dig around for the setting. If you need more help, ask.

There is not any touch pad icon anywhere. I am running Vista 64-bit Ultimate, if that helps. I looked in Device Manager and every other place. UGH!!

1.Access the properties of the Synaptics Pointing Device by right-clicking on the system tray icon at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. If you do not see the icon, open your Control Panel and select the "Performance and Maintenance" option. Click "System", then "Hardware", then "Device Manager" to view the devices on your computer. Open the "Mice and Other Pointing Devices" selection.
2.Click on the "Device Settings" tab of the "Mouse Properties" window. The "Device Settings" tab is at the top of the window and located farthest to the right.
3.Highlight the Synaptics Touchpad from the list of available pointing devices. Click the "Disable" button underneath the list. Click "OK" on the pop-up menu to confirm your selection. Click "OK" on the Mouse Properties window to close the window. Your Synaptics Touchpad will now be disabled.

Tips & Warnings

Connect a USB mouse to your laptop before disabling the touchpad so that you will still have control of your pointer.

You could try upgrading the synaptics touchpad driver http://www.synaptics.com/) and see if you can disable it once you have the driver updated using datsunzcr's suggestion.

My cursor jumps all of the page when I'm typing on my Gateway NV76R45u laptop. what am I doing?

I was having a similar issue with my laptop. What I found was while I was typing, my thumbs were close enough to the "Touch Pad" to move the curser. You can decrease the sensitivity or disable the touch pad (which I do when the external mouse is connected) Let me know if this helps.

I use a mouse rather than the touch pad, and the cursor sometimes takes on a life of its own, jumping to different parts of the screen - even when I don't go anywhere near the touch pad. Can you please...

Download and install this application. It is called touchfreeze, it disables your touchpad while typing and regains sensing motions when keyboard is not active.

My Sony laptop cursor jumps around when typing

Yes, you are accidently hitting the touch pad.
Trust me--that is what is happening. Some laptops have VERY sensitive touch pads. If you can disable the touchpad and use a mouse, do it. (that is what I do, as I suffered the very same problem.)
On one customer, I had to actually open the computer and disconnect the pad.
If you can't disable it (many new computers have some sort of switch to disable it, even if it's a combo of the Fn key and one of the special function keys, practice better hand position--raise your seat or lower the laptop to keep your wrists from drooping and getting your thumb near the pad.

My cursor on my toshiba laptop keeps jumping when am typing

Ive seen this problem a few times, the problem is that your accidently or inadvertently touching the touch pad as you type. To fix this just disable the touchpad when your typing or put a piece of paper over it. To disable the touchpad it varies on different models but can normaly be done with a button near it, a FN and F1-8 key combo or through the touchpad driver on the task bar. Consult your manual for information on how to disable this.

Mouse moves on its own

Your palm might be brushing on the touch pad while you are typing that is probably why the cursor jumps to a different location. as for disabling the touch pad I think that it is not possible unless you install a synaptics driver for your laptops touch pad.

Shortage?

There is a ribbon cable between the laptop & the screen. It sounds like you have a short in that cable. If you're not good with tedius electronic repairs, it would be best to have a shop repair it.

HOW TO DISABLE THE TOUCHPAD FOR ACER 3680 AND OTHERS??? PRESS Fn +F7
Yep, it was that simple. At first I made sure i typed without my fingers or palms touching or near the touchpad. I noticed it seemed to stop or happen less. Soon as I disabled the touch pad all is back to normal. Yet I spent hrs trying to find out how and there were all these posts by people suggesting downloads and other more complicated things etc..
