The manual for this notebook does not specify if the optical drive is removable or not.
Look at the bottom of the notebook around the area of the optical drive. If you see a sliding lever or something similar(may be a graphic of a lock) try sliding that and see if the optical drive comes out.

When you say the drive is "broken" what exactly do you mean? Does the tray open? Will it read discs? Is the operating system recognizing the optical drive?

Most dvd drivers can be replaced. There is probably 2 or 3 screws holding it and the whole drive will come out. I would go to your pc manufacturer site and see do they have replacement or one that would work for it.
This link has a form towards the bottom where you can request part for your laptop.

Hope this helps.

Iv emachines E727 windows 7 laptop, it plays dvds fine but it wuldnt play audio cds or when you insert an empty audio cd it does not show up. pls help, what shuld i do. Iv tried uninstalling the drive...

Try Both of these steps to fix the issue.

Please press the windows key on your keyboard , hold it down, and press R

Type in devmgmt.msc and press enter

If it asks to open, click yes.

Then, you should see a list of devices installed on your computer..

Double left click the cd dvd drive choice to expand it ... Then..

right click on each listing inside the cd dvd section..

And click uninstall.

Once uninstalled. restart the computer, and test the cd drive..

It should now be working in windows normal startup!!

Then, if its still not working normally.

Go to the link below.

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cd_dvd_drive_problems

on the page that comes up. click on the green run now box.
It will start a file download ( this file is perfectly safe as its directly from microsoft)

Once you download the file, make sure to run the file..

It will run a dignostic program that will attempt to repair and fix your broken drive!

I put in a cd and it now wont recognize the drive at all. i can't get the disc out, no idea how to fix it

Hi Laurenleighd

Have a look at your CD/DVD drive and you will see a small pin hole that about the size of a needle. You can take a straightened paperclip and push it in there to open the CD dirve manualy. After you've removed it, try another CD that you know is working and see if you have the same problem. If this CD also get stuck in there then we know the CD/DVD ROM may be faulty.

Is this a Dell Laptop or Desktop?
Can you open and close the Drive with or without anything inside it?
Can you hear any noise coming from CD/DVD ROM when you insert a CD?
What Happens when you insert any other CDs or DVDs that you know is working fine?

When you open your MY Computer/Computer in the Start Menu, Can you see the drive there, or is it not showing the CD dirve there at all?
If the you are 100% sure this is not a power issue, then it might be the CD/DVD driver that needs to be re-installed.

Hope this helps

When we put in a game for our 360 system it says it's playing a dvd we can't get the game to work. how do i fix it so it says play game amd not play dvd? (it only does this with 1 game. the rest work fine

Ok if your for certain thats the original dvd drive and the other games work then its too many scratches on the disc or your laser lens needs wiped off with qtip and rubbing alcohol.

If you get an xbox thats say play dvd all the time on every game and it says to play this disc stick in a xbox 360 console then its the wrong dvd drive for that motherboard and you wont get the key (on a chip in the motherboard on the cd drive) unless you have the original dvd drive taken out of your xbox. Then you can just switch that little motherboard on the bottom of the dvd drives and it will read games. This is for those who will look at this with a xbox off ebay that they cant figure out how to fix. Its just an expensive dvd player.

Hi. I connected my western digital HD to a DVD Player. It worked fine in the DVD player and still does but it does not work in a computer anymore. When you connect it up to a computer it seems to struggle...

I would assume the dvd player encrypted the drive so you could not copy the movies from your dvd player to your computer, so you could not burn them to prevent piracy. If you wanted to use the hard drive in your computer you will need to format the drive.
