There is a electronic part inside of the fresh food compartment behind the Control Panel that is most likely responsible for this=> 61005988 Adaptive Defrost Control
Click here for photo location of the => 61005988 Adaptive Defrost Control The way you explain I believe you are saying it freezes over and then decides to defrost. The defrost thermostat and defrost heater also maybe the reason. I go by the odds but in your case the ADC causes a more erratic symptom's

Sharp SJ-F80SP-BK 4 Door refrigerator doesn't cool, freezer (bottom) working fine

When the freezer section gets cold and reaches its required cooling temperature, after that the frost on freezer section starts defrosting and the cooling fan in the freezer section blows this cool air from freezer to fridge. But if the defrost cycle does not start then over ice will get collected on freezer ventilations and that will block the air passing section from freezer to fridge, so the freezer gets cool but fridge section does not cool. Its defrost problem. Try manual defrost by unplugging the refrigerator from main power outlet for 4 hours then reconnect it and check, if the same problem is noticed again,. If yes then its defrost board problem. The defrost board located in the back of fridge section. You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com or from online sears part site. ------------- Thank you.

I have a hotpoint freezer which is self defrosting but its icing up and warning message keeps flashing up

There is defrost timer, that will shut off the freezer and turn on a heating element that quickly defrosts the cooling fins. then it cycles back on. If any part of that system goes out the freezer will not defrost.

How can you tell by looking if a freezer is a manual defrost or self-defrosting type? Thanks

If you have freon lines running through your shelving, this is a manual defrost. If you have an evaporator fan motor blowing air in your freezer compartment this is a self defrosting model. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

I have an Maytag upright freezer.Does it self defrost?if so how does it self defrost?Do you have to leave the plug and hose out all the time? model # is rfu1500aaw

This is not a self defrosting freezer . Remove the plug and hose ONLY when you unplug to defrost . You should defrost when the coils get about 1/4 " of frost (ice) on them . Otherwise , the frost will act like the plastic insulation on electrical wire , not letting the coldness freeze the food solidly .

I have a maytag freezer does it self defrost?

If it has a fan in it, it's self defrosting. The moving air burns away the frost and 8 out of every 24 hours, the defrost timer will turn a heating element in the cooling coils, to melt away any ice buildup.
If it isn't a self defrost model, you can safely defrost it woth a pan of hot water. I also use a spray bottle woth hot water to help the process. DON'T use anything electrical to make the heat. Water can drip into or onto it and you could get electrocuted.

How to recharge freezer electrolux FFH17FC7CW0

HI, It is a big job to recharge a unit. If it need recharged, it means there is a leak. Do you have any cooling at all? If this a self defrosting freezer? If it is self defrosting, make sure there isn't any frost building up on the evaporator panel.

Freezer not defrosting

Hello pumpguy2
Welcome

You said, you have a Kenmore bottom Freezer Model 596.73503201. It works fine but the freezer has stopped defrosting. Any suggestions?

It is supposed to be auto or self defrosting.
What do you mean you are getting ice forming in the freezer?
Waiting for your response and more detailed explanation.

Ice forming daily on freezer bottom

ice build-up on the bottom of the freezer usually means that there is a problem in the self-defrost system. You may even have damaged door gaskets. When you open the freezer door, you also let in a blast of warm, often humid air. This moisture usually freezes onto the evaporator coils immediately. Self-defrost freezers are supposed to self-defrost themselves. Every 6-12 hours they turn off the compressor for a few minutes. A defrost heater then turns on to melt any frost build-up on these coils, which allows the frost and ice to melt, then it drains off to the pan underneath. Unfortunately, though, when a component fails, too much frost can build up on the evaporator coils. With no air flow over the coils, cooling in the freezer compartment becomes almost non-existent.
You can manually defrost your freezer by turning it off for 24-48 hours and turn it back on to see if it begins to work properly. If your freezer now works the way it's supposed to, test the three other components in the self-defrosting system, the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the defrost timer.
You can visually inspect some defrost heaters to see if there is a break. If it looks physically broken, then it needs to be replaced. Otherwise, check the defrost heater for continuity.
The defrost thermostat, which is just a bi-metal switch, lets current pass through at factory set temperatures. It also prevents current from passing through at the temperatures set by the factory. The set temperatures for the defrost thermostat vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
You can test the defrost timer by manually advancing to the defrost cycle. You can usually manually advance this timer with a screwdriver. Insert the screwdriver into the advancement pinion and turn clockwise a 1/4 to 3/8's of a turn. The timer should advance out of the defrost cycle in less than an hour.
If, after testing these components, it still does not cool properly, there may be a problem with the refrigerant level and you will need to contact a professional appliance repair person.
