Are you talking about the admin password, something you'll need to make sure nobody can mess with your settings, or some wireless security encryption, which you'll need to keep nosy neighbors from using your wi-fi?

Hi,
First, you got to get into your router, but entering the address of the router in your explorer.
Default address should be 192.168.1.1, and username and password are "admin".
If it's an older unit, the username is blank and password is "admin".
When you're in, go in "Administration" then "Management" to change de password.

Hope it helps.

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to setup a Password or Network Key on the router to make it secure you need to access the Wireless Settings Page.

To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security you can select either Wep, WPA or WPA2 under the Security Mode you will be able to personalize the Network Key. The Network Key or serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure.

If the password is not working you can also reset the router by pressing the Reset button at the back of it for 15-30 seconds using a Pen and a Paper Clip.

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

Hi,
Since you reset the router, the username and password were set back to its default values as well. For Netgear, the username and password is: Username = admin Password = password

I have inherited a router. Unfortunately the original user ans password is not available. Is it possible to set up for myself without these? JohnR

I've never seen one of these, but I'll bet it has a recessed rear-panel reset button just like every one I have seen. Press and hold the button (usually you need to use a straightened-out paperclip or something like that) for 10 seconds and then release it. After the router restarts, all its settings will be back to factory defaults. According to a couple of sites, defaults for this model are:

default IP: 192.168.1.1
default username: admin
default password: password

Once you're at the setup pages, it's usually not too difficult to find what's where. All routers do pretty much the same things and have the same settings.

Hello, I've had my D-Link router for about 5 years now. The model is WBR-1310. The connection worked fine up until today. I took off the connectivity between the router and my PC about 6 months ago,...

If the default password on the D-Link has been changed then-
To reset the D-Link back to the default settings -
Press and hold the RESET button at the back of the router with the power ON untilthe LEDs flash at the time the release the RESET button.
Connect a LAN cable from the D-Link to your laptop/computer's LAN port, openthe browser on your laptop/computer and enter the D-Link's configuration URL..
http://192.168.0.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = blank (just press Enter) You can now change the default password.
You can now configure the wireless settings. Now configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop withthe router's wireless settings.

How to set up an wireless password on my linksys? please help. thanks

Hi there.

Type this into your web browser: http://192.168.1.1

It will bring you to the Linksys setup page.

A window will pop up prompting you for a username and password to access the configuration page for your router. Enter "admin" (without quotes) for both the username and password.

From there you can change your router name if you feel like it.

click on the Wireless tab at the top of the settings screen. Change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) from the default value to something unique (you can use the same name you set as your Router Name in the previous step. Then Disable the Wireless SSID Broadcast option and click Save Settings.

Now click on the Wireless Security subsection at the top of the page. In order to password protect your wireless network first use the Security Mode dropdown box to select WEP and then from the WEP Security dropdown box select 128 bits 26 hex digits. Choose a password between 6 and 8 characters and type it into the Passphrase box. Then click Generate. Finally click Save Settings.

Thank you for using Fixya!

I cant find my password to log into my wireless

You will have to go into the routers setup and chose a new password, If it requires you to enter the old password before it allows you to enter a new one , you can find the tiny reset button on the router and press it to restore it to factory default settings, be advised though, this will reset All the settings for your router, not just the wireless password, so you will have to configure it all again.

Hi, I just replaced my old Dlink router with the N150 and I set it up following instructions on the enclosed cd. I can connect to the internet without any problem but our laptops and phones can't seem...

It's possible that you're just not broadcasting your SSID. Try going into the settings for your router by plugging directly into it with a laptop and visiting 192.168.1.1 (usually, might be different for your router). Put in the username/password (should be written on the pamphlet or be on the CD somewhere) and check your wireless settings to make sure that "Broadcast SSID" is checked. Also be sure that you've given it a unique name, and password protection is always recommended.

I set up a password in my wireless router. But on the screen it tells me it is unsecured. How do I get it secured without messing up the rest. Regards. C.Smith

A password will keep others from gaining access and changing your settings. So, you've got the first step complete. Next, you need to change the wireless settings to kick off any unauthorized users and prevent them from getting back.

Since you didn't include the model of your D-Link router, and can only offer a link to D-Link's page with information to go about securing your wireless network. You may find this YouTube video very helpful, too. If you have trouble finding what you need, reply with your router model number.

I hope this helps and good luck. Please rate my reply. Thank you.
