You are not suppose to suck water with an ordinary vacuum. If its a shop vac yes. Otherwise you will ruin it.

My son accidentally sucked up some water with my dyson animal and now it has stopped working. Is this permanent or will it come back ?

It depends how much water and how long the motor was run after sucking up water. If it was just a little water, most of the water should have been caught in the dust compartment. If there was enough water that it was able to suck it past the filter and into the motor it could cause motor failure.

  • There a twist lever on the side to change from floor to tools. If "everything else works" then you have it on tools. Twist it back to floor and it will work.

Shop vac sucks water for a few seconds then it spits it back out

Don't use the paper filter for sucking water. It can ruin it. It will still be usable if you just set it out to dry but there is no reason to use it for water in my experience. I have a sears shop vac and it will fill up more than half full without ejecting the water.

Water will not suck back up

Either the tank isn't sitting square, or there is a oblong seal that should be on the top of the clear window, it seals the top to the edge of the tank. If missing, it won't suck up water. Also sound like it nees to be cleaned out, run a solution of water and vinegar thru it to clean out the lines.
