If your hard drive is failing you will want to contact them if you are still in your warranty. If you are out of warranty its surprisingly easy to replace one yourself.

I would try a different computer first if that does not work it may be the drive is bad and would need replacement. For the most part memory has a good warranty so you may be able to have it swapped by contacting the manufacturer.

The external storage device has several major components:

* disk-drive inside the enclosure
* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.
Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.
Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.
Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.
Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.
Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.
Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

If that external hdd is still under warranty bring it back to the store and ask for a repakcement but do not tell then that you dropped it. Most of the times these hdds have 1 yr warranty from the reseller and 2 yr warranty from the manufacturer.

Disk read error

A disk read error on boot is an indication that the hard disk drive is failing and needs to be replaced.

If the system is under warranty, then contact the manufacturer/warranty provider. If not under warranty then you have to replace or have the hard drive replaced for you by a technician.

Portable hard drives are fairly inexpensive ($100 or less normally) and labor to replace one should run $50 to $100 or so.
