To replace the motor you need to do it from the front of the dryer. You will need to remove the top to get the front off. You can get a parts drawing on the link below.

Instructions
    • 1 Check the power. If your Whirlpool dryer does not operate you may need to replace defective fuses. That includes the thermal fuse located inside the back cover panel. Look for open contacts in the timer. Verify that the door switch and the door switch activator are operational and that the circuit breaker hasn't been tripped.
    • 2 Examine the coils. If your dryer isn't producing any heat the gas valve coils may be defective. This prohibits the valve from opening and the gas from igniting. The electric igniter and the terminal bracket that secures it may need to be replaced. Also check to see if the thermal fuse is blown, if both volt circuits are on and the thermostats are functional.
    • 3 Test the drive belt. If your dryer does not tumble a broken drive belt and/or idler pulley may need to be replaced. Test for a burned out motor. If the motor is stiff, does not rotate manually and the blower fan housing is obstruction-free, the motor needs replacing. Also check for a defective door switch.
    • 4 Check the vent. If a load takes longer than one hour to dry clear the vent duct of any obstructions. Determine if the heating element is partially burned out. Unclog the internal ductwork by removing the lint filter and inspecting inside the duct. Verify the cycling thermostat is working properly. In gas dryers a defective flame sensor may be responsible.
    • 5 Inspect the motor. If your Whirlpool dryer is making too much noise it is most likely due to a defective motor. Worn rollers (or wheels), idler pulley, plastic glides, rear drum bearing or blower wheel may also be to blame. In most instances replacing the worn part will solve the problem.
    • 6 Check the thermostat. If your appliance overheats replacing a defective cycling thermostat or unclogging a vent system generally will alleviate the problem.
    • 7 Replace worn rollers. If your clothes are being damaged you may need to replace the rollers that support the clothes drum, rear and/or front drum seals and/or front glides.
    • 8 Search the Internet or your local Yellow Pages to find out where you can purchase Whirlpool dryer replacement parts. Sites, such as repair2000.com, offer appliance repair guides on CD-Rom.

How do I remove the front panel of my Whirlpool WGD5520SQ0 Gas Dryer

That is correct. What you want to do is take the lint trap out of the machine, on the top right side. When you do this you'll notice two screws that are there. Remove these screws, they are attached to the blower housing. With that done, take a flat screwdriver and slide it in betweenn the top and front of the dryer on the left or right front side and gently pry (pop) the top up. With that done, there are two screws on the upper inside on the left and right. Take these out and then you'll be able to lift and pull the front of the machine off.

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

check out this electric no heat tip...

Brown marks left on clothing -- occasionally My dryer is not gas but electric but that wasn't a choice on here.

If your clothes get marked or torn in your dryer, check these: Rollers Rear seal Front glides Front seal Rollers Your dryer may use rollers, or wheels, to support the rear of the clothes drum. When these are worn out, they may cause the clothes drum to drop down slightly, which can pinch the clothes between the top of the clothes drum and the rear of the dryer interior. When the rollers wear out, you need to replace the whole set. Rear seal Your dryer may have a felt-like seal at the rear of the drum. If this seal is worn, torn, or missing, clothes can get caught and torn in the space between the clothes drum and the rear of the dryer interior. When the rear seal wears out, you need to replace it. Front glides Your dryer probably uses nylon or plastic glides at the front of the clothes drum for support. When these are worn out, they may cause the clothes drum to drop down slightly, which can pinch the clothes between the top of the clothes drum and the front of the dryer interior. When the glides wear out, you need to replace them as a set. Front seal Many dryers have a felt-like seal at the front of the drum. If this seal is worn, torn, or missing, the clothes in the dryer may get caught and torn in the space between the clothes drum and the front of the dryer interior. When the seal wears out, you need to replace it.

How remove front panel of frig gas dryer faqg7077kw

Hello there:
Here is how to disasseble the dryer
White/Westinghouse - Frigidaire style dryers- How to take apart....

White/Westinghouse, Frigidaire style dryers ( some 417.######## Kenmore dryers ) - How to take apart:
Disconnect power first In order to test and effect repairs on any product, you must be able to disassemble and reassemble the appliance. So lets start with disassembly on this dryer. Unplug the dryer. Get the top up by pushing in on 2 clips on either side as shown in this picture. We need to remove the front of the dryer next. There are 2 or 4 screws inside at the top on most of the older dryers that we need to remove. Once the screws are removed, you can pull forward on the front and lift the complete front off the 2 clips on the bottom of the dryer. Unplug the door switch wires and set the front aside.

if you need to further dissassemble it follow the next steps
Next step in disassembly is to remove the belt from the idler and the motor pulley. This is done at the rear of the dryer. Remove the 2 screws holding the inspection plate on the left rear of the dryer. Remove the plate. Look carefully at how the belt threads around the motor pulley and idler pulley so you can replace it. Remove the belt from the motor pulley. Return to the front of the dryer, grasp the belt in one hand and the front of the drum in the other hand. Lift up on the rear of the drum and pull forward with the other hand. There is a ball on the rear of the drum that rides in a socket located in the center of the back of the dryer. You are lifting the knob up and out of the socket. Look in the center of this picture for the socket. You have taken the dryer far enough apart at this point so that you can accomplish any repairs needed on this style dryer. It is not necessary to go this far for all repairs, but if you need to disassemble, you have the information.

I have a whirlpool gold gas dryer model #GGQ8858JQ1. When I push the start button the dryer wont start it just makes a humming sound.

You either have something caught in the blower or you have a bad motor. If you unplug the dryer and pull it out. Then remove the rear panel (1/4" hex screws), looking at it from the rear, the blower is on your left. Remove the two screws that hold the blower housing on. You should be able to get your hand in far enough to see if there is something in the blower.

How do I remove the front bottom panel of my Whirlpool gas dryer

Yahoo! I figured it out on my own. There are two clips on top that are recessed. I had to use a regular screwdriver and push the clips down and pull the panel out at the same time. It was easy after I realized what needed to be done.
