Question about HP Photosmart 3310 Printer

1 Answer

Hi i havew a HP Photosmart all in one printer/fax/ scanner. Recently the colour went crazy with a green bias over all. I have changed cartridges, realigned, cleaned printheads etc to no avail. I found your solution #! but the error code I get when I press the * and # followed by 1 2 3 is R0043.I saw someone else had a similar problem but cannot find the solution again on your pages. I remember that cleaning the contacts with alcohol ( will vodka do?) was part of the solution, could you point me in the right direction with the fix please? I have tried cleaning the contacts on the two magenta cartridges but no joy so far. When I run a Print report, all colours are ok except the two magentas which are pale and patchy. Thanks in advance GLN

Hello, thanks for your prompt reply. The printout is poor, be it from the printer or via a scan. I supect the answer lies in the printhead, but I do not know how to access it. I will try to get some pure alcohol and try that. I didn't know that it was possible to get printhead cleaning fluid, - I will try that in a few days.

One way or another i will certainly let you know.

I did notice on another reply concerning the error that there was a procedure to follow after cleaning the cartridges and reinserting, I think there was a sequence of powering off the printer? Perhaps you could advise on that one as I cnnot find the post again.

    Thanks

Hi Thanks for that, so far no change to the problem. ihave yet to try to clean the head with water, the troubl is that the pipes which go intot he cartridge are set horizonatally and I think the ink must enter these and turn through 90° prior to printing. This makes it difficult to get fluid through the 'plumbing' and I do not think it is possible to access the printheads from the other side without a major dismantling of the printer.

Nonetheless. this thought occurs to me, and I would appreciate your thoughts on this. If I were to load a used 363 cartridge with printhead cleaning fluid, then activate a cleaning cycle, this would presumably force the fluid through the entire head - hopefully sorting the problem. How does this option sound to you or is it likely to cause major damage elsewhere?

I attach a couple off scans, one is of the Nozzle check, this obtained fom the R0043 menu and the other of the normal Print Report. I note the considerable difference in performance of the dark magenta and the light magenta in these, the dark apears normal in the nozzle check, but clearly is not in the Print Report whilst the light is inadequate in both. I wonder why there should be a difference between the two reports?

Yes, no trouble at all, i will look forward to your thoughts

Hi there, thanks very much for your thoughts. I guess we are both in the dark a little on this one. Anyway, I have ordered some cleaning fluid and the tools to fill a cartridge - one I used earlier so it should work and we will see what happens. This may take several days before I can get around to it but I will let you know the outcome in due course - could be the start of a new business!!

I tried - perhaps foolishly, to disasemble the printer to get to the print heads today. I won't do that again - I only just about got it back together as it was and I still didn't get to the print head!

    Regards

HI there, I thought I would update you. Firstly, filling a cartridge with cleaning fluid had no effect. I decided to 'attack' my printer and disassembled it to get to the print head as I did not really know what I was looking for this was not easy. However, the printhead, when moved out of the parked position, has a top cover/manifold through which the colours can be seen. This will come off if eased gently upwards. Beneath this are tubes which pass down into the head itself. I injected cleaning fluid into the six colour tubes in the head, waited a couple of hours then repeated this. After re-assembly, I ran several cleaning cycles and re-aligned the printhead, and I see progress. Magenta is now getting through albeit not enough and the generally green cast is going. I think that a further cleaning session will be needed, however, as the whole process is rather longwinded and fiddly, I will hope that things will improve further on their own, or at least with the normal clening process.

I have taken some photos of the print head assembly if they are of interest for the future as there seems to be nothing available to help the inexperienced in this task. A word of caution to anyone who tries to do this cleanig process. The top of the printer and scanner have to be removed, this is achieved by removing several obvious small black screws which secure the black plastic deck covering the printer assembly. However. the hinges will retain the assembly, on each of the hinge arms are levers which have to be depressed to slide the assembly off the hinge. Here is the problem in the right hand back corner there are three electric ribbon cables and and a small wire connecting plug. These MUST be disconnected from the body before the top assembly is removed. I did not notice them intially and they all pulled out - fortunately with no damage. The method of connection should be carefully noted before the removal of the top assembly - there is little spare cable so be careful. To re-assemble, after replacing the black deck which covers the printing mechanism, ensure the cables are held clear at the back of the printer and carefully slide the top assembly back onto the hinges. The cables can be re-fixed relatively easily if you have small fingers as the working space is very limited. Removal of the printer sidewall case might be necessary to permit this.

    I hope this helps

Hi Nanotech, Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

I have written a 'paper' on the whole procedure and I hope that this will copy through on this page. If not and you would like a copy perhaps you could advise me of an email address which I could use to forward it. i guess we can now declare the matter closed. I will probably do some more cleaning again to get the best result I can.

    Thanks again

Note: I find that my paper are too long ( 4 pages including photos ) for this method of communication so perhaps there is an email address I could use?

First off, I would like to request you whether this problem happens only when printing or it does happens when Copying or Printing Fax. If this is only when printing, then the problem could be with the driver or the communication between Printer and the Computer. You'll need to reinstall or update the driver and also you will need to try with another usb cable or swap the usb port/s. It's also recommended to try printing on another computer.

But if the same problem persists with all prints, then it's confirmed that the problem is with the printer and most probably the cartridges or with the printhead. If you've already got new cartridges, I don't think you would need to clean them again. Try cleaning the contacts on the printhead and make sure they are cleaned. You can use cotton bud dampen with alcohol or spirit or acetone. I won't recommend vodka or beer since the percentage of alcohol is less and won't dry immediately. I hope you understand that water isn't good for cleaning metal contacts.

Another thing, don't use alcohol on the nozzles, if you don't have cartridge head cleaner solution, you better use water. Particularly, you would need to clean the printhead of the magenta, not every contacts or nozzles.

I am not very sure whether this model's printhead could be removed or replaced. If it could be removed, you can wash the nozzles with tap water or in some cases it's required to put it in a bowl of warm/hot water so that the clogged ink will be cleaned.

These are the tips I could suggest for now. Let me know if you need further help.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Well, I am not very sure what exactly do you mean by "Sequence of powering off the printer.." but I would assume it's the hard reset steps since there aren't any other booting method that I know of. If I am wrong, am sorry for that. After cleaning the cartridges and they are installed try the following steps:

    1. Without turning the power off, remove the power cord from the back of the printer and from the wall socket.

    2. Wait 30 seconds and reconnect the power cord to the printer and to the wall socket. Turn the unit on if it is not already turned on.

    3. Check the printer for the error message. If the error message still displays, go to the next step.
These steps are recommended by HP. You can also perform this before and after the cartridges are installed.

    Once again good luck.

Would be glad to hear your updates.

Well, I am guessing the same as you did. Is there any possible way to access the nozzles of the printhead? Somehow with a can air or syringe to spray some water on. If at least you can do that, that would be of great help, otherwise there is nothing much we can do at the moment.

Regarding loading a used 363 cartridge, I am afraid if the printer would not detect it as a supported cartridge and that wouldn't let you do anything. There is no harm in trying and there won't be any damage either. The quality of the two prints seem strange but if I am not wrong, the better quality print-out printed out slower and the other faster. This might be with the print quality as if you print in Best quality and Normal quality. In fact neither of them came out correctly.

These are the things I can share with you. Honestly I am also out of ideas since this problem is beyond what we were expecting and what other printers do.

I suggest you run the 'Tap 10' diagnostic test pattern for your HP PS 2600 series printer model...this will display the electrical health of the ink cartridges and confirm that your printer is operational (I am guessing one of the ink cartridge control lines is open).

Can you use 2 black cartridge instead of 1 black 1 colour in the HP all in one 2575 photosmart printer

You would not be able to.
The cartridge front is different and would not fit.
Also it is a requirement to have the correct cartridges to print.

Printer not printing properly

When you changed the cartridges, the printer automatically prits a test / calibration page. This page must be placed in the scanner, then you have to press the "scan" key (the green one). It will calibrate an align the system. Then you'll be able to print.

Scanning

1. Check if the color cartridge is not empty

2. Find and click twice the printer and faxes icon in control panel and choose C3180 printer.

3. Right click and choose preferences.

4. There you can search in the preferences menu to set your printer and print in color.
