Remove the bolts from the area around the spark plug. This will allow for the head to come off. If there are not lines or scoring the engine may need to have some seafoam run through it. You can purchase this at a a dealer like www.arcolawn.com

If there is scoring put it back together and sell it on craigslist to someone who can rebuild it.

Good luck

Ariens lawn mower stalls & dies on a grade. Checked oil dip stick and saw almost none indicated. added approx. 2 ounces...ran fine on grade. After mower cooled to room temp. checked oil stick agai

incomplete question. 2 oz of oil would not make a diff or hardly raise the level on the dipstick if it was that low. or maybe your engine has a low oil senser to kill the engine when low on oil and the 2 oz. was just enough to get it started again? clarify problem. R

My lawn mower will start then it will die after a few seconds, what could be the problem

If the mower was tipped it is quite possible oil from the engine has traveled up the breather and soaked the air filter in oil, this would richen the engine up and stop it running, remove the air filter and check for oil saturation.

see if the oil smells like gas the carb maybe sticking and gas gets into the oil washing the oil out this will make hard starting and smoke if so the needle valve is not sealing if you caught in time without major engine damage a sign is the oil being over full and smelling like gas

My daughter added oil then proceeded to mow the lawn. mower started smoking then quit. When I got home from work I was able to start the engine one time and it smoked a lot. I turned it off and have not...

With the engine cold, check the oil level. Oil level is quite important especially in a smaller engine. Try to clean all excess oil off engine and body. Then, if you can get it running....check for any leaks. If it is still smoking, it has other issues besides being too full of oil. The oil breather will be full of oil. The oil filter may be saturated with oil. Check those 2 things especially as they allow motor oil to be drawn into the carburetor and cause excessive smoking. Pull out and clean the spark plug. Post back if needed.

I have a Craftsman 650 series lawn mower. It starts but sputters and smokes and finally dies. I replaced the spark plug and checked the oil but it did not help. What do I need to do now??

I have a similar issue in that my Craftsman 650 in that it sputters and smokes out of the muffler and spits oil out from there as well. It does not die, but I cannot operate the lawn mower with all the smoke and oil blowing out. Plus, I get oil leakage on the deck of the lawn mower (top). What would I check for here?

I hev a briggs & Stratton 5.25hp lawnmower and

I would need the engine numbers to tell ya what to do for sure. It sounds like the engine is too full on oil. Check oil levels carefully. That engine capacity is only 1 pint/16 to 20 oz's ALSO you friend may have cleaned under your deck and turned the mower with the aircleaner DOWN. That causes oil to flow from the crankcase into the air cleaner and muffler. That aircleaner is a dry paper and should not have any oil on it, If this is the case then the oil accumulated in the muffler will burn off in time. Oil soaked paper aircleaners will cause this engine not to start.IT CANT BREATH

Ran over somthing with lawn mower now it wont

You're right to check the flywheel key - are you certain it's ok? Also our instinct is to tip the machine over to clear the obstruction, which can send oil to places it shouldn't be! Does the machine have compression? It's possible to break the con-rod if you hit something really solid. You can check the piston's still moving by taking out the spark plug and inserting something like a cable tie in the plug hole. As you turn the engine over you should be able to detect the piston moving up and down. The jolt could also have dislodged coke in the engine that could foul the spark plug. Try fitting a new one. Come back to me if none of these solutions work..

Husqvarna 65021 RS lawn mower, > 1 year old will not start

yea i think you scratched the cylinder. if there is not oil at any point then the engine will damage itself. and it wont have good compression. unless you want to attempt to rebuild the engine i would scrap it.
