Thank you for posting your question here on

It could be the pump is bound up but it is more likely the motor is failing. It may be a small part such as the capacitor or the starting switch, but could also be more severe such as the winding itself. You will also want to examine the shaft where it passes thru the pump and motor and look for signs of rust from a pump seal leak.

Start with the capacitor. Use a digital multi-meter (DMM), preferably with a capacitor setting, or an analog meter set for Ohms. With an analog, you should see the needle deflect as if testing a closed circuit then it will slowly drop to 0 if the capacitor is good. If it doesn't move or moves and stays to the side showing a closed circuit the capacitor is bad. If you notice a burn hole near the terminals on the end of the capacitor do not bother to test it. If you do not have access to a meter you can try grounding the posts together with a screwdriver to see if they arc although It is not a very reliable test method. Be sure you are holding on to an insulated handle for the tool you use to short the terminals together or you can get a good poke.

If you are not familiar with testing these parts your best bet would be a local electric motor repair shop to see if the motor can be repaired or if it would need to be replaced. They should also be able to ensure there is no pump damage. If you wish to continue to try to repair it yourself please comment with any questions you have as you work thru the pump and motor.

What could be wrong,My pump wont turn on , it makes noise but wont kick on

open it up and see if the impeller will turn freely when it is disconnected from power. Call pool guy or pool store and see if it just needs a solenoid.

Pool Pump Motor (AO Smith 2HP 56Y CX) won't turn over when switched on. Makes slight humming sound. Removed the motor from pump housing. When I spin the impeller when powered on, the motor starts up

How do you reset spa motor/pump?

Most of the motors have an internal device called a clixon that detects excessive current and shuts off the motor. It then turns it on again when it cools off. If you wait and wait and there is power for sure at the motor terminals and the motor is not even humming then there is a problem in the motor. If it hums for a few seconds and quits humming for a while then the motor capacitor is bad or the motor is bad. I hope this helps.

My deep well jet pump is not workin it is just humming but has power to it

Hi. The most likely cause is the start capacitor, located under the cap on the end of the motor. Trip the breaker before removing the screws on the motor cap. Capacitors are readily available from pump supply stores as well as appliance parts supply stores.

My pump kicked the breaker, shutting off power to the heater and making the pipes freeze after letting it sit for awhile and hopefully unthawing the pipes i turned the pump back on it made a humming sound...

See if you can turn the impeller by hand...if you can then the motor start capacitor has probably bit the dust..this will throw a breaker if you leave it on too long...motor capacitors are available from appliance parts stores and some electrical supply warehouses

Grundfos water pump is humming with no turning, if I take pump cover off and turn the shaft it starts?

Sounds like it could be a blown capacitor in the motor. Disconnect from the power supply and remove the capacitor - it is usually situated undet the terminal box cover- examine it for leakage or distortion and replace it if necessary.

Our circ pump is not running, no noise, what is the cause

Could be a number of things. You need to run through a serious of troubleshooting steps. First you need to make sure the pump has Power. Easiest steps are checking the breakers, timers, or any switches that control it. Anything further requires a voltage meter, and familiarity with electricity. Don't go further if your not comfortable working with electricity. If there is no power to the pump work your way back and find out where there is no power and address that issue first. Once you have power to the pump, verify that you can turn the shaft freely. if the shaft does not turn bearing are likely seized, but you should hear a humming noise. If you do get a hum the start capacitor, or winding is likely bad. if still no hum then the motor windings are likely bad. you can check this by disconnecting the supply wires from the motor (you have to disconnect, not just shut off power) and checking with an ohm meter. you should get a continuity reading, if not the windings are bad. there are several more steps you can take, but without more information that's hard to determine. start with the above and see where it gets you.

Turn on pump and it only has a humming sound. Motor does not start

Check your start capacitor. Probably best to remove the motor and take it to your pool supply place.

The pump lost vaccum, now the motor shut off and pump only hums.

Prime the pump. If it still just hums, try to turn the impeller. If the impeller is not jammed, and the motor hums or it doesn't start at all, the motor may be bad. Check for correct voltage of the incoming power wires inside the motor connection housing. Sometimes turning the circuit breaker off, then back on will fix it.

If you can hear the drain motor humming, look for a clog in the air gap. That's the silver dome on the back of the sink. If there's nothing there, you'll have to find the clog inside the bottom of the dishwasher.
Remove the bottom rack. Rotate the short tube that the lower spray arm is connected to about 1/4 turn clockwise and remove the lower spray arm. Remove the screens over the pump assembly. The hole to the drain pump is on the bottom right. If the motor hums, but doesn't pump, and there's no clog, the pump must be replaced.

If the motor doesn't hum in the drain mode, check for power at the pump with a voltmeter. the pump is behind the toe panel on the left. Reaching the terminals to take a reading may be difficult. you can disconnect the terminals from the pump to take the reading only if you use rubberized alligator clips to connect to the wires. If the motor has power but doesn't hum, replace the motor. If there's no power to the motor, replace the electronic control / timer.
