Your router is most likely outfitted with WPA security, which the DS won't work with. You can switch the security of your router to WEP, in which case it will work.

Are you trying to connect to your internet connection for wireless? If it is, the WEP key is the password that you set up for your wireless device so that devices that can see the your wireless network will be able to connect by entering the right WEP key. If you didnt change the WEP key of your modem or router, then the default WEP key will be found at the back of your device, but if you had changed it before then, that's the WEP key that you need to enter.
You will need to access the router (via its local web address using a suitable web browser) Once you have provided the login information, surf to the wireless security section and either document the WEP key (if not encrypted) or change it. Understand that changing the WEP key will invalidate any else's access, so be sure to share the change. The WEP key may have to be done in HEX, meaning that it must be done with the numerals 0-9 and ONLY the letters A-F. The ket must also be a specific length, usually 13 or 26 characters depending on the requirements of the router.
WEP key is the security code used in your router. If you forgot your wep key you can check it in your router's security settings. You can access the setup page of your router by :
1. Open your browser (ex. Mozilla, Google Chrome) 2. Type in the address bar 192.168.2.1 3. Enter your password (by default the password is just blank so you can just hit submit without typing anything)
4. Then click on the wireless tab, from there you can check your wep key in the security tab. You can also edit any information you want it that page.
You maybe having problem connecting wirelessly. There's a possibility that when you try to connect wirelessly,it's asking for the network key or WEP key, There are two option both free and paid depending on the warranty of the router. If the router is not under warranty anymore and you contact the manufacturer of the router to ask them to provide you the WEP key, they will ask you to pay for the support. But if you want the free one, follow these steps:
1. Check for the manufacturer sticker at the bottom of the router. You will see there a label that says WEP KEY. It's usually 10 digits characters.
2. Try to type that to the box where its asking for the security key for the wireless network.
3. If nothing happens and its says, INVALID KEY. There's a possibility that the router is manually configured and needs to be reset to the factory default.
4. Look for the reset button at the back of the router,usually a red hole that needs a pen or any pointed object to push through.
5. Push the reset button for 30 seconds while the router is on.
6. Power down the router for 30 seconds then turn it back on.
7. Try to use the WEP KEY that is underneath the router again since it already goes back to its default settings.
If its still the same, you will really need to contact the manufacturer of your Internet Service Provider to reconfigure the router.

The WEP Key is the key one sets in the Router when one set the security, it is a number and it must be entered into the correct field, when attempting to logon and connect to a secured network.
Either set your router to Unsecured. The one doesn't need a Key.
Or re-setup your router, by loging into the router from your web browser typing in it's address, and set it up again, and this time note down the Key you set,usually it is best to copy past it to a notepad document, as it is a very long number, then when asked you can type enter it into the required field, and then you should be able to logon.
You need to consult your routers manual, to see how to do this.
Cant you use WPA2, wep is very weak and should never be used if you have the option to use WPA.
If you have used WPA2 security ( you choose the password )
and the printer is asking for a wep key ( the router generates a long key , you dont choose it).
That will be the reason you can't connect, if the printer cant be changed to WPA, you only have the option to log on to the router and change security to WEP, which i would not recommend
You need to open the router's admin page by opening your Internet Explorer. On the address bar type http://192.168.0.1 it will prompt you for username and password. By default the username is admin and the password is blank (no password). You can see the WEP or WPA key on the WIRELESS tab. Goodluck!
