Question about Hitachi 42HDT51 42 in. Plasma SLC1551AW

1 Answer

Our Hitachi 42HDT51 monitor has been shutting off, however the lights on the panel and AVC box have remained green. There is no picture or sound, the screen is black. If I unplug the power cord from the back of the panel for 5-10 min. It will turn back on. Sometimes this lasts a few minutes, other times it will remain on for hours until we decide to turn it off. Once we turn it off, we go through this when we try to restart it. We have eliminated the Satellite receiver to rule that out as a cause and the problem remains when just using the off air antenna. This started a few days ago, after changing the channel. Any ideas??? Thanks

Would this leaky/dried capacitor be on the plasma panel or in the AVC box? Would the single capacitor or an entire board be replaced? What would be involved in replacing a single capacitor? I think a friend has a capacitor tester we could use.

To be clear--you are saying it is located on the back of the plasma panel where the power cord plugs in near the lower left side (when looking at the back). Just want to start looking in the right place :)

Also, once the offending capacitor(s) are found, will they be have a number on them to know what to replace them with. Do you have a place/site you recommend for replacement parts?

I assume this will require soldering the new capacitor in place. Is there anything special about soldering one of them? I have done some soldering in the past.

Thanks for your help so far.

Thanks. We will contact our friend tomorrow to get the tester and try to get started on this. Will let you know how it goes.

Hi,

The symptom has no issue on the input (channel reception) because the problem is internal and caused by leaky/dried electrolytic capacitor in the power supply section of your tv. It will produced an unregulated supply which will disable the unit because the supply will not go into complete cycle. It will make itself stable within a warm-up (a few minute) but the symptom will get worst. Leaky capacitor sometimes has a bulged/dome at the top and easy to recognize even without using the capacitor checker but the problem is the dried capacitor which has no physical indication of fault. It is better to have a capacitor checker/tester if you decided to fix it yourself. Once you've replaced the said parts you're unit will back to normal again. If you can't do the job yourself I would advice you to look for a qualified technician to isolate the problem.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

This is in the plasma power supply where the power cord connected, good that you have a capacitor checker, this is caused only by one capacitor but much better to test all capacitor there since the replacement cost only a less that $2 or $5 at the most. Much cheaper if you troubleshoot the board since I've already point out the parts you are going to check but it is your choice if you like to replaced the entire board. Gudluck...

Also when intalling the new capacitor, ensure that it is in the right polarity to avoid further damaged.

Yes, you're right. This capacitor has a working voltage and capacitance labelled on its body. Replace with same ratings. Once found the faulty cap visit ebay.com or digikey.com for replacement or your local electronics supply.

Since you've already try to do some soldering before I know you can also do it this time, just prepare soldering iron (30w), soldering lead, disoldering pump.

Check and replace damaged component/s at its back-light inverter board, or replace this board as card basis. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Surf the site with patience. Pull up older posts. It will be best to replace the inverter board as card basis.
http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
To some model sets; especially LED back-lighted types; the back-light inverter circuit will be part of the main power supply board [SMPS]. In such cases, the power supply board might need replacement. To some models sets, the back-light inverter and SMPS section circuit will be integrated at its main board itself. If so; the main board should be replaced. To some models of sets, all these section circuit will be integrated at its main board. If this is the case, you have to replace the main board.
