Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

Windows XP SP2, Intel DG965WH mobo. Two SATA hard drives, two EIDE hard drives (WD200EB). Suddenly one day, without warning, the two EIDE drives just disappeared from the Hard Disk Drive list and files on the drives could not be accessed. In addition, XP will not reboot with the EIDE drives in the system but the system seems to work fine when the EIDE drives are removed. The EIDE drives work fine in another system, running Win 2K.

The problem sounds like you either lost the IDE channels on the MOBO or the chipset was updated with corrupt files.

run everest home and see if there are current updates for the northbridge chipset. if you have 2 ide channels on the board switch the primary and secondary ribbons and see if the hard drives are there. if your cdrom's are ide and after switching ribbon cables they disappear and the hard drives reappear your mobo lost an ide channel, you would need to replace the board.

Ive built my first pc and all went well until the message no hard drive detected comes on all parts are new so any help would be great in fixing this thanks dave

Verify that the hard disk is connected on both data and power cables and is receiving power (it hums at startup); also that the proper EIDE or SATA slot on the motherboard is used, and properly jumpered (e.g. a SATA 2 disk on a SATA 1 configured port is likely to malfunction).

Check that the BIOS is configured to autodetect the hard disk type, and is using the appropriate adapter (EIDE or SATA port), without RAID options or such.

In a pinch, try also ignoring the motherboard labels (e.g., plug the hard disk on the fourth SATA port instead of the first -- the mobo numbering is not always the "logical" one, even if it usually should be.

SATA 2

Yes!
The good thing about SATA, is that once you plug into a SATA header on a motherboard, BIOS will recognize that device.

No such type of cable..... however, depending on what you want to achieve (it's kind of obvious, tho)... there are SATA cards that have two or more SATA / eSATA ports. You can get eSATA cables and route them back into the case.

The cost for modifying might justify getting a newer motherboard (and cpu and memory)... Frys has such a mobo & cpu for $59 for the set. Memory for that set is around $20 for 2GB of PC6400 (800MHz)...

Just in case....

The problem of your laptop is the hard disk type. because acer 5220 laptop is using a SATA hardisk that automatic detected or supported by Vista. But in the windows Xp you need to download the sata driver for windows xp and save it to the floppy drive. In the beginning of windows installation press F6 to install another device or scsi the windows setup search your floppy drive for the sata driver and install it automatically. XP wont boot not recognising Sata hard disks

if you want to try and get to those files you have best buy another drive and load windows on it . then connect this drive using an external usb adapter/enclosure, not before , not during , only after windows is installed and then you may get to this drives data .if you have luck.
or purchase an enclosure and connect to another computer.
at most you should attempt on this drive is to boot windows and run a repair on the drive. even that can be risky without backed up data.
