There are lots of possibilities.
If the sparkplugs are fouled that can cause a weak spark, carbon residue that can ignite the incoming gas too soon.
A plugged muffler is also a common cause, and will happen the most at highest RPM.
Cross firing wires can also do it.
If nothing else, it could be a burned or misadjusted valve, which a compression test would help determine.

My briggs and stratton 18 hp vanguard model 356447 will not start just back fires through the carb. I have good comprssion and spark at both plugs. I replaced the flywheel key as thought the backfireing...

check intake valves for proper seating. If the valves do not close completely it will allow the engine to backfire thru the carb. Another possibility is internal timing caused by the misalignment of the timing gears between the crankshaft and cam gears.

Hi Samuel,
This is an indication that your carburator was malfunctioning due to dirt build up. Send it to shop to tune up the unit, If you can't find a qualified shop ask the manufacturer of your unit where is the nearest local service center in your area. Preventive maintenance is needed by this kind of unit to function well. Also they will clean or replaced the spark plug.
Hope it may help you.
Thanks for using Fixya.

My briggs vanguard v-twin 16hp after initial start up this fall started leaking fuel from the carb into the cyl. and into muffler. The jet is seated and not dirty. It leaks somewhere else in the bowl. ...

The solenoid on the bottom is a fuel shut off solenoid to prevent backfiring if shutting down engine with the throttle still open. If you're leaking fuel into the engine, the float is not closing the needle valve in the carb. remove fuel bowl and replace float, and needle valve with seat.Be sure to blow out all fuel passages

I have a B & S vanguard 20 H.P. vert. shaft, 8 years old on Simplicty tractor. Keeps fouling plugs. Clean or replace plugs and it runs fine for about 1/2 an hour then starts to miss, blacksmoke, and...

Anti-foul plug adapters might be a temporary solution (treats the symptom and not the cause).
Personally, I would take it to a good, reputable, small engine repair shop that has verifiable references, and have them repair it.

Engine appears to run normaly until PTO is egaged, then it backfires and quits. Engine is an 18 HP Vanguard twin, model 350777.

Check you float in the carb I had one a few years back and it was partualy plugged cleaned it out and everthing worked fine. Also is the PTO binding up or bearings going bad putting an excessive load on the motor.
