Question about Meade 8" LX90 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope non-UHTC w/Autostar Suite-LPI - MEA 0810-90-40

1 Answer

I have a Meade LX-90 8 inch telescope that gets a motor fault failure in declination. I have done all the usual attempts to fix it Ex. train drive which geberates error, swap out autostar, autostar cable, reseat cables on the dec motor board etc. On approx 11/2010 I posted this same question to FixYa and they gave me the name of a person who I beleive lived in Haverhill Mass who I contacted thru the Yahoo LX-90 user group and was planning on bringing my scope to him for possible repair. As luck would have it I had a harddrive failure and lost all infomation about this person (should have put the info on paper) Yup I know about backups, had external HD backup which did not work. Is it possible that you would still have this persons name so I could contact him again. Thank You In Advance John Maher Hudson Ma BUDMAN54A@VERIZON.NET

Well it could be several people:

Ron Sampson -- available on the Yahoo LX90 group post a message for him- he can repair any of the boards inside the scope and also the hand controller.

Procedure to set up a meade 12" LX200R on

It's pretty much all spelled out in the manual. Here:

http://www.meade.com/manuals/TelescopeManuals/LXseries/LX200-ACF_manual.pdf

You should train the drives, and purchase a separate 12 volt power pack with the correct cigarette lighter style power cable. Calibrate motors BEFORE you train the drives with the same power source you will use outside at night.

If this is a GPS model-- and new--- I would execute a RESET on the hand controller-- calibrate motors and train the drives and take the scope outside and get a Satellite link and do a two star automatic alignment.

Make SURE you are centering the correct alignment stars. By the way TRAINING must be done in alt az mode before you put the scope on a wedge-- it cannot be done in polar mode.

Calibrate motors and then TRAIN the drives-- this sets the gear backlash.

You should Calibrate motors every time you take it outside and Train drives at least once every year. The symptom you describe is called "rubberbanding".

Train the drives.

I have a 10 year old Meade LX10 with Magellan computer. Do I need a separate power supply for the declination motor?

No, just one--- this scope runs off of 12 volt DC battery like a car starter battery pack-- that has a cigarette lighter style 12 volt cable. This plugs into the power console on the telescope. You need the proper 12 volt cable which you can get from Meade and other telescope retailers--

Your problem may not be the motor?

Is this a 497 hand controller? If it is check the TELESCOPE TYPE in the controller. It should read ETX125. You cannot just switch controllers. The controller has been TRAINED for the other scope.

To switch it you must do a RESET, Calibrate motors and then train the drives. These "values" are stored inside the hand controller. If you move it to another type of Meade telescope you must RESET and do Calibrate sensors and Training again.

The dis-assembly pictures are located on the Mighty ETX web site here:

Inability for the telescope align

Replace the battery for the GPS.

Start from scratch.

Reset the hand controller, calibrate motors, train drives, calibrate sensors.

Make sure you have either fresh batteries, or better a seperate 12 volt power pack. The above will eleiminate everything except an actual BROKEN electronic part (such as a bad gps board).

If it still will not align using the gps, time to send it back to Meade for repairs. Make sure you have the latest firmware in the hand controller which is 43Eg. You can download the firmware using the UPDATER free software here:

Meade lx-90 dec printed circuit board bad. where

Since you already disassembled the scope-- you can send the board to Ron Sampson and he should be able to repair it. He fixes main boards and hand controllers (including the screen and keyboard on the hand controller!)

If you post a message on the Yahoo LX90 group looking for Ron Sampson he will answer you. You can then email or phone him for instruction on how to send him the board.

ARE YOU SURE it's the board? It could be a bad keyboard or a bad cable on the hand controller. You should get another hand controller and cable and test it before you send it off. Can you borrow a hand controller and cable from anyone.... or from a local scope retailer?

Check the autostar controller; you may have a stuck key. The telescope should run without the control - unplug it after it starts and see if the slewing halts. (don't plug it back in while powered) The other thing, would be a bad sensor on the motor.

When i turn my LX-90 8" telescope the GPS is not working.

After you RESET the telescope-- it returns to factory default settings--

1. Calibrate Motors

2. Train Drives

3. Set Time, Date, Site, and Daylight Savings Time to NO right now in USA

4. Calibrate Sensors on Polaris

5. Do an Automatic Alignment--

Here are all of Meade's manuals on line--
