It may not be absolutely necessary to update the maps every year, but if you wish to, you need to go out to the Garmin Nuvi website and download the map update you want to your computer. Then you need to plug your GPS into your computer using the USB cable provided.
The site will prompt you to download the communicator and that's how the file will be transferred from your computer to your GPS.
If you need further assistance, please let me know.
Only every three years or so. There are not much changes year to year. Unless you travel constantly, no need to update yearly. Sometimes it's more hassle than it is worth. I have updated mine every year and finally found out that it does not pay.
If you did want to update the maps you need to find the software company that makes the map (usually IntelliNav or Odyssey) and then buy it from them and PRAY it works by loading the new map data directly on your SD card.
From experience, this makes your GPS crash a lot and make sure you back up your SD card before you even attempt this.
The updates it is referring to are the NAVTEQ database updates. This is the turn by turn street mapping and an update is available every year. You can purchase updates from the Lowrance accessories website http://www.lei-extras.com/store/search.asp?SearchType=Unit&Unit=iWAY+350C. The part number for this update is 95-63.
But you don't NEED this update. It costs $74.99 and may not even include updated street information for where you are. I would use it as is and if you think the street mapping is too behind, take the $74.99 and put it into a new Automotive GPS...you can get really good ones for under $100 now.
I do recommend installing the latest firmware update for the iWay 350 from http://www.lowrance.com/en/Products/Automotive/iWAY-350C/Downloads/iWAY-350C-Software-Update/.
There is no need to update the maps if you are happy with the gps performance. Many GPS manufacturers offer update maps every year and this might be a way that they are trying to scare you into buying something that you may not want. That said if you have had the gps for more than 2 years I would reccomend updating the maps, especially if you live in an area that changes a lot, i.e. California. Can you clear the message? If so does it return frequently? If would help if you provided the model of the gps. Let me know, -WN
