Sounds like an overheating issue, once the machine gets up in temp from being used it wont allow you to turn it back on until it has cooled down a large amount. This could be an issue on your motherboard or in the power supply. To be quite frank with the age and quality of the machine I would use it as is until you can afford to replace it swapping either the motherboard or the power supply I think would not be worth the cost in time or price for the components.

Dell 5100 will not turn on

Power "Outages" are not the problem, it is when it comes back on again, and the Power Switch is still ON, that's the problem, the "Inrush" current of reconnection, frequently "Blows" the Power Supply's, I suspect that is what has happened.. You probably need to replace your power Supply, simply open unit up, and remove PSU, via four screws at rear, and get a similar unit, they are relatively inexpensive, under $60.00 usually. Reinstall PSU and connect up all power plugs and you should be good to go.

Dell tower desktop Dimension 5100. Tower makes whistling sound.

sounds like it could be a bearing in your hard drive. is this problem constant? If so, I would open up the tower and disconnect the hard drive and then power up the tower again. if the sound goes away--you need to get a new hard drive. If not, you could have some dust bunnies in your cooling fan.

Computer will not turn on at all. Dell Dimension 5100 desktop

I would unplug the power supply from the motherboard, wait a little while and then plug it back in.
Try to power everything back up and it should come up.

I am assuming you are getting a light on the motherboard that indicates power is being supplied?

Dell 5100 Power Supply.

Check if the fan of power supply is working (back),
the same way open your computer and chech if the fan of the cpu is working.
If not the power supply must be replaced.

Please advice that not all dell power supplies are compatible with the universal ones.
Check first yours before buy one. (in case of replace)

System turning completely off for no reason then rebooting automatically

Hello,

That kind of problem is very common to all computers. There are three possible causes. the power supply got shorted, The memory got dump and cannot resist to load the operating system. The system got conflict both the hardware's and software's.

solution:

1. try another functional power supply or test your power supply with appropriate tester.
2. REmove and clean the memory both the bank and the chips and test. if same problem occur then try another functional memory.
3. last; format and reinstall the hard drive to renew and refresh all setting and install all the drivers.

if these solution won't work that the time that the motherboard got shorted. however if in the first boot the system display it bios then that can be resolve.

tell me if ever what happen.

Power supply ?

I'd recommend purchasing a new power supply.

Your Dell Dimension 5100 comes stock with a 305W power supply. This is a bare-minimum wattage that will only handle what they ship on the system & not much more. You're better off upgrading the power supply with a compatible after-market model.

You can go to a PC parts store in your area and take your chances...but they're usually more expensive then Internet sources (they've got to pay for their brick-n-mortar store overhead).

Here's a link for a very inexpensive replacement 400W power supply for your Dell Dimension 5100:

http://www.affordablesurplus.com/dell-5100-5150-power-supply.asp

This particular site offers $8 Flat-rate shipping & a 1 year warranty. Your power supply is only $49.99 - you might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere, but that's the best I could find with a quick Google search.

If my answer helped you, please provide feedback :-)

Good luck!
