Question about Nikon Coolpix 8700 Digital Camera

1 Answer

COOLPIX 8700 Camera will not power up. Tried different fully charged batter, no go. Have not used for some time. Pwered it up once, set date and time. Would not power up after that one time. What am I missing here?

No, according to manual you can use a DL245 non-rechargable camera. I do not have one and it is not exactly a household item. Only camera store in Fairbanks AK is out of them. Will have to look around town tomorrow. Since I tried two different EN-EL1 batteries, I tend to doubt that the battery is the problem but certainly will give it a try if I can find one.

No to damp area, camera has always been in warm house. Bought non-rechargable battery (for $14.39), no luck - still does not power up. I think that there is some setting on the camera that I have wrong but can not find anything about it in the manual. So far, I am out around 30 bucks and still have no solution. Need solution or refund!

    Thanks

Yes, yes, I have the same problem. In addition, the battery charger lamp does not blink.

Have you tried regular batteries instead of rechargeable?

The reason I suggested i5 is that one of my cameras will not work on rechargeables anymore. You might be able to order the battery you need on line. Did the camera get damp or anything while you were not using it? If so just keeping it in a warm dry atmosphere for awhile might do the trick. If it was working fine before, the batteries are the my first guess. Good luck, How very frustrating for you.

This must be frustrating for you. Without the camera in my hands, it is not possible to know exactly what might be wrong. I have 10 cameras of different types and so am just suggesting what I would try first with mine. Have you had a good look at battery connections? are they clean? corrosion can take place in storage.

Just charge and use the battery a few times and see if it will work better after 2 or 3 times. If to, buy a new one. Then to make sure nothing is wrong with the camera, switch to the auto mode like you can read on page 15 of the manual. the camera should make pictures when there is some light and you press the shutter release button.
The manual is still online with Nikon USA.

This is a Guess. If the battery is very old the voltage may be so low that only a few things work correct. See if you can charge it. Auto Focus uses a Motor (takes some power) Taking a photo takes quite a bit of power..

Hi anyone come up with a solution to the having to set time and date every time you switch the nikon S710 on please

The next time you finish setting it, press the set/ok(or whatever your button is called) button twice.

Date/time needs to be set every time camera is turned on...! Can't download pictures (tried using Windows wizard and nikon transfer), same result ....

In most cases this is an indication of some sort of water/liquid damage on the board.
Or a "memory cap". on the board needs to be replaced

Coolpix S710 time-date setting required EVERY time

I thing your problem in your internal power. I don't know what NIKON S710 use. For some camera, they used internal battery (Circle and small) in their board. If you find same, try to change with the new one. If you don't find it..In my country i find the battery in the watch service. I hope usefull

Camera shows battery exhausted with new batteries.

You should be using Nickel metal Hydride batteries (NiMH). Do not use Nickel Cadmuim(NiCd), Zinc carbon or alkaline.

Battery Problem

Sorry this isn't a solution, but I wish my 8700 would last even as long as yours does. 2 hours, period. on or off, taking pictures or not, two hours & it's a stone dead battery. Just on the off chance it will help I'm about to upgrade the firmware to 1.3 (I don't really think it will help). After that I've decided to take the camera apart & try to find the problem or possibly just a hack that will let me turn it OFF without removing the battery. I'd as soon have a bunch of bits for the project bin as have to put up with this 2 hour battery life problem. Good luck with your problem, and if I find anything worth while I'll post back.

Default settings on startup

The Clock Battery When the main battery is installed or an AC adapter is connected, the clock battery will charge in about 10 hours. When fully charged, the clock battery can provide several days of backup power. The language-selection dialog will automatically be displayed when the clock battery is exhausted. This is from the manual- but they do not say it is replaceable.

Camera time and date

Every time I use my camera after leaving it for 24hours I need to reset time date. Camera will not start until updated. I have a similar but intermittent problem - sometimes when restarting the camera it starts up but with all the default settings - I have to reset the time and the user 1 and 2 settings etc. I suspect that like many other cameras there is an internal battery that needs to be replaced after a couple of years - I'm going to bring it to a local repair place and have them run a diagnostic. If I get and answer I'll let you know. If anyone else has a possible solution let us know . Thanx
