Question about Singer 7442 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

I tried servicing the bobbin area of my Singer 7442. I followed the instructions in the manual carefully. The straight stitch is working but all other stitches are not catching in the bobbin.

Chris gave some good advice. If your timing is off you can try to fix it yourself.

Couple of things to check is the needle new? if not change it,
Pull the bobbin thread out and bobbin case, then put the machine on a zig zag stitch, turn the hand wheel slowly and see if the hook (pointy thing that catches the thread) is just above the eye on the needle (when the swing is all the way to right) if it is not then you need to take your machine in for service.

Good luck and please rate my answer.

Singer 7442 won't stitch at all. It picks up the bobbin thread nicely, but after that won't stitch at all. Any suggestions?

Sound like one or the other of the threads is stuck. Completely un- thread your machine and remove the bobbin. See if the needle moves freely with the machine unthreaded. If it does, carefully rethread the machine and reinsert the bobbin, making sure the bobbin thread is feeding the correct direction. Let us know what happens.

Will not zigzag or decorative stitches. New to these newer plastic style machines Always used older steel machines. This was given to me my by my sister who used it very little. Could cam be broken?

Hmm, I'm wondering if it has been cleaned and oiled recently. Older mechanicals require frequent TLC. Consult your owner's manual for cleaning and maintenance instructions:

Is your sewing machine mechanical (ie, not computerized)??? CAUTION--if your machine is computerized, do NOT proceed with the following suggestions.

If it is mechanical, have you cleaned and oiled your machine recently? Most mechanical sewing machine failures are because they have not been adequately and routinely oiled, the old oil has solidified and frozen the mechanics. I recommend Bernina oil or liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube (or similar good quality sewing machine oil) for mechanical machines--do NOT use 3-in-1, cooking oil, WD-40, or the sewing machine oil from your grandmother's sewing basket. (I am not associated with any Bernina dealer.)

If it is in fact frozen, pick up a bottle of liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Oil at the hardware store. Oil one or two drops in every oil hole (see your manual) and also every place where metal rubs on metal. But DO NOT oil any plastic gears, rubber, or belts. If it is still stiff or frozen, direct a hot handheld hair dryer into the top and bottom mechanism of your machine. See if that loosens it up. You may have to repeat.

Once your machine is working again, place a drop or two of good sewing machine oil as directed above. Be sure to use a small brush to clean the lint and dirt out of your machine, especially around the feed dogs and bobbin area. (Caution: Compressed air will sometimes force the dirt and lint into areas that cannot be cleaned.) And continue to use good quality sewing machine oil to keep it running. Recommendation: every time you change a bobbin, after 8 hours of sewing, or every six months if it is not in regular use.

This sounds like a bearing failure, I would take it in to a service center and ask for a free estimate.

We have 2 singer 7442 machines and they will no longer wind the bobbin. Up to this point we followed the instructions the manual gave on how to thread and wind the bobbin. How do we fix?

If you have followed the instructions and the winders do not work, the machines will need to be repaired, or you could purchase a Sidewinder Bobbin Winder and forgo the expense of having the machines repaired.

Singer touch n sew 750 winding bobbins

You can find Singer bobbin winding instructions at http://www.singerco.com/resources/bobbin_wind.html.
"Birdnesting" occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.

Singer 7470 thread getting caught on hook

Take out the bobbin and parts again and check there is nothing caught in that area. Ensure you put them back in correctly as sometimes they can go in slightly misaligned. Also rethread the top to ensure smooth running. Make sure all dials are set to a straight stitch and it is not some misalignment of these causing the knocking.

Singer 7442 will not sew

Had the same problem as mommyb2 - it was the bobbin spindel was in the wrong position. Push bobbin spindel to the left and it works for sewing.
Have the same problem winding my first bobbin - pushed spindel to the right to engage bobbin fuction and the machine locks up and wont wind the bobbin. Irig did you bring it in for repair? I'm thinking its broke - which **** as mine is a brand new machine
