If I am not wrong, you might be saving the file in another non-default format, i.e other than "ODF" format. When a document is to be saved, maybe as "Text Document" or "Drawing" etc.. you have to select the recommend "ODF" format.

Open or edit a text document, click "File" and then "Save As" and make sure "ODF Text Document(.odt)" is selected in the "Save as type" box. If it's a drawing, the recommended format is "ODF Drawing (.odg)" and if it's Spreadsheet "ODF Spreadsheet (.ods)" and so on. Check both the "Automatic File Extension" and "Save with Password" and then click "Save" Once you click the "Save" button on the Save As dialog box, you'll be presented with the password boxes. Enter your password two times in the boxes provided and click "Ok". Now close the document and re-open it from the folder where you just saved it.

Hope this helps.

Let me know if you need further help.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

1) Anything generated on a computer with OpenOffice, can be used on a computer with MS Office.

3) There is no learning curve. The user interface of OpenOffice is VERY similar to MS Office.
(OpenOffice Writer is just like MS Office - Word)

4) OpenOffice is FREE. This is because it is open source software.

How to Password Protect And Access a Password-Protected Word Document

How to Password Protect a Microsoft Word Document
If you are working on documents that are important and shouldn’t be changed, then there is a way to password protect them so they cannot be changed except by you. You can also make the documents unavailable to open unless the person has the password as well.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • A Computer

  • Microsoft Office with Microsoft Word

  • Word Documents

  • General Knowledge of Microsoft Word

Step 1

Open Microsoft Word and open or create the document that you want to password protect.

Step 2

Click on “File” in the toolbar and select “Save As”.

Step 3

Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Security Options”.

Step 4

This will open a “Security Options” window. You may now set a password under the “Password to open” box, “Password to modify” box or both.

Step 5

Once you type in the password of your choosing you can opt to make the file “Read-only” by checking the appropriate box. You may then click “OK” to save your changes and then save your document as usual.

How to Access a Password-Protected Word Document
Accessing a password-protected Microsoft Word document is only possible when you have the correct password that opens the document. Encryption and security levels differ for separate versions of Word. Microsoft 2007 doesn’t offer any solutions to allow a user to retrieve forgotten passwords and Microsoft does not allow its employees to help in retrieving or breaking passwords. If you do not have the correct password for the document, you will be unable to access it.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Microsoft Word

  • Document password

Step 1

Navigate to the location on your hard drive where you stored the Word document.

Step 2

Double-click on the document to begin opening it. A separate window will appear that prompts you to enter the document password.

Step 3

Enter the password, which is case-sensitive.

Step 4

Click the “Open” button or hit the “Enter” key. If the password was correct, the document will open. If it was not correct, another window will display advising you the password was incorrect and prompting you to try again.

    Password Protect...I use Vista Home. When I go to save a file. FILE-Save AS the window that comes up has an option of "Save with Password". This option is ghosted out and can not be selected.....

    There are a couple of ways to do this.

    Try going to Tools;

    Then Options;

    Click on security Tabs;

    you will see this

    msword-specify-password.png
    Got to Password to Open;

    Click Ok;

    Fill it in and you will see this;

    msword-confirm-password.png
    Re-enter your password;

    Click Ok.

    Save the file like you normally would.

    This should resolve your issue.

    Make sure you check your registry for Windows Vista for errors to see if that is causing the problem also.

    I am including another link you may be interested in for your IE passwords also.

    If you are referring to office documents such as word excel, and power point. Download open office and install then you will be able to open the documents.

    Then either you can save them 1 of 2 ways.

    Option 1
    Click on File->Save As -> and change the file type to you choice (i.e .doc, .xls, .ppt).

    Option 2 Click on Tools-> Options on the left pane you will see Load/Save.
    Select the General at the bottom you will see a "Document Type" drop down box and "Always save as" drop down box. Change each one to their respective type. Please see the attached image for a better clarification.
