SOURCE: Bosch Dishwasher odor
Make sure that drain hose is not kinked, and that the unit is draining properly. Odours are most commonly caused by the unit not draining properly and subsequently using the dirty water in the rinse cycles as well....not perfect washing results will be the tell-tale sign here....

You may be getting sand in from the supply lines. Fill a clear glass container from the sink a few times and look at the bottom for sand particles. You may be getting sand from a pool filter? Remove the filter from the faucet head (it should unscrew) and look for sand particles in it. You may not be getting them in the kitchen sink if the dishwater inlets are below the sink as the particles may be sinking to the bottom of the pipes. You may need to put a filter in the dishwasher inlet. Try filling the dishwasher by hand with bottled water once and then see if the sand is still there. If so, it probably comes in through the water supply.

A water softner will not make the dishes any cleaner, it just makes it so they don't have water spots on them.
If the dishes are dirty, it is most likely that the nozzles (holes) in arms may be plugged.
Also check to make sure you are getting plenty of water to dishwasher. Make sure all water valves are full turned open.
If the control panel does not work all the time, it is very likely you have either a shorted wire, or a fualty main board which is very common in newer machines.

Put a bowl filled with 2 cups of clorox on the lower rack and run a wash cycle (nothing else in the machine) this will kill the mold spores in the machine, and clear the smell.

Another suggestion: maybe you are using too much of the "right" kind of detergent. I have learned that this model requires very little detergent; a tablespoon at most. A salesman who has the same model told me that if you use too much detergent the dishwasher will smell bad. That made no sense, but he was right, and it took me a while to figure out how much "too much" is. I tend to operate on the theory "If a little is good, a lot is better."
