Question about Pride Hurricane 4 Wheel Personal Mobility Vehicle PMV

2 Answers

I own a Hurricane PMV S3824301001030. Must be ancient; have owned it since new. Have had everything checked out by authorized Pride serviceman who says everything is aok. He does admit that I have a serious problem, The problem is that the motor heats up so rapidly and severely that after three or four trips around the yard -no more than a standard city block- it stops. Furthermore, when it quits the brushspring on the top side of the motor has lost its temper and must be replaced. Repairman thout the problem might be the brake. I have spent over $500.00 dollars on the problem and I can't see spending another $1000.00 without a guarantee that the problem is solved. PLEASE HELP! Lou

Thanks for the response. I have a question about the rotation of the motor. It looks like it would rotate one way for forward and the opposite for backward. Am I correct in my assumption, since there does not seem to be any place for the shifting of gears? I should have mentioned another observation: When I try to reverse my scooter I seem to have very little power. On a slight grade no power. Are there different windings in the motor for different directions? The only "guarantee" I need is that I can drive it down the road for a couple of miles without having the same problem. Sometimes it was necessary for me to give a little shove to make it go. Thanks. Lou

Hello lou,
it sounds definetly like you need a new motor in any case if the problem where to be fixed by a serviceman they would provide you with a guarantee. How long of a guarantee is another issue and you would have to work that out with them. You could also contact pride directly who would put you in touch with a repair company that would offer some sort of guarantee but due to your unit being so old they would most likely only guarantee the part that they put in as new along with the labor work provided. It might be more economical to look into getting a newer or used model here is the link to contact pride directly http://www.pridemobility.com/contact.asp if you have any further questions message me back I await your reply Thanks Rick

If the motor really is overheating, you may need to replace the worn out motor, or have it rebuilt. If the motor isn't really overheating, but is still shutting down, you may have a bad thermistor or thermal overload switch.

I would contact pride or a service centre as if you put the wrong grade of brush in the motor you can damage the comm and motor.

The motors are not cheap.

My Pride Hurricane PMV will not go forward or backwards when I engage the trottle all I get is a click but it will not move. The battery meter shows fully charged.

Make sure that the manual brake release/freewheel lever is in the DRIVE position. The click indicates the brakes are being released but the motors are not kicking in. I hope this helps- good luck!

Pride hurricane pmv just replaced batteries everything was fine went up and down the driveway (flat surface) and it stopped working

Are any of the lights coming on? If so, are any flashing, and if so, how many times or is it constant? Check to make sure the freewheel lever is not bumped which will cause a no-go status. Put in freewheel and place firmly back in drive (located at the rear of the scooter).

Go back in and make sure all of the snap connections are tight. Undo them and redo them, don't rely on a visual inspection. Check the circuit breaker; push it in to reset. If it has tripped, you will feel a click when you push. Check all the fuses.
