Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,
I presume that you thought the belt might be slipping? Unfortunately in this instance the indications are that the motor is malfunctioning.
Options are to change the brushes, if that appears to be a relatively easy task, or to purchase a new motor but please note my pre-typed guidance notes for belts and motors following.

'However it is false economy to just have the brushes changed although financially very attractive. Experience of others is that the brushes may only last months unless, that is, the motor is totally refurbished at the same time. It depends on how old the motor is and how much wear the commutator has had'.
In other words you can take a chance!
I changed our Bosch motor (and at the same time the belt of course) a few months ago- it is nearly 20 years old- at a cost of GBP250.

Good luck,
John C

Dryer hums but will not start

bad motor,if it does start and runs then shuts down and you can't restart it until it cools down you have a bad motor,or open the door and see if you can spin the drum,i found a dryer that the belt cut through the pastic belt pulley and the motor couldn't turn, also something could be stuck inthe blower wheel but if you can spin the drum then it's the motor.the noise you heard is either a bad roller, the belt pulley or the motor bearing.next time send the model number and i can look up you dryer to see what parts are in it.hope this helps.

Neff washing machine not spinning. Fine yesterday, slightly funny noise and now drum not moving on wash or spin! Any clues?

Could be worn Carbon brushes on the motor.Check belt has not fallen off though...some Neff you need to buy half motor to fit new brushes as it comes this way, perhaps a good test is to blow ut any dust next to the brushes this may allow the motor to Briefy run long enough to tell if brushes are worn ..Half motor cost to buy - 60 GBP......Happy new year...

I have a 1997 saab 900 turbo...the serp belt just blew in it while in, I heard some metal noises as it happened, and was able to shut it off ASAP...the belt looks new, any ideas? What was the metal noise?...

It is very likely you have damaged the engine, the reason for it going could be a few things but if the belt was quite new then it may not have been fitted properly, the metal noise could have been the tensioners giving in or the pulley wheel rattling loose, have you investiagted the engine yet?

Firt thing to do is remove the cam cover and see whats going on araound the belt.

get back to me for more info once you have looked.

I have a front loader frigidaire, belt is fine. I remove the belt and tried to spin the motor by turning to spin mode i just heard clicking but the motor did not spin. Is the motor bad?

The motor probably needs to be replaced. If you take the motor to a local appliance parts store they may be able to test it to make sure. Also they should be able to order you a new one

Remove lower rear cover of washer, remove belt, undo 2 screws securing motor, remove motor wiring plug,, lever back motor and remove motor.

Remove carbon brushes at end of motor, and check for wear, if less than 8-10mm long, then replace them.
Clean armature with emery cloth or sandpaper before fitting new brushes, if it still does not work then the motor is probably faulty.
Plz rate my solution.
Thanks.

Maytag Performa PAV2300AWW screaching noise, belt problem, pulley broke

My Maytag Performa was making the loud squealing noise. I changed out the water pump/bearing, took care of the problem.
Putting a new belt on just help burn up the bearing (they needed replacing) and probably ruined the new belt. Probably seized the water pump bearing and the belt jumped and broke the motor pully. A washing machine motor is very strong, when that h20 pump bearing seized (or possibly some bearings jamed up) the motor kept on turning that belt and the plastic pully gave in. You'll need to replace that also. If the h20 pumb bearing is turning freely, likely the bearings jammed up but or now loose. That bearing should be tight, no slack or play in it. You can probably wobble the pully on it all around while turning it. The slightest slack is too much.

Loud squeal during wash and spin cycles, maytag atlantis washer

Squealing normal occurs due to belt slippage. I would check your belts (look for cracks. Check the belt tension as well, most washers have an adjustment, normally on the motor that allows you to increase the tension of the belt.

If part of a belt gets torn and it is long enough, it will hit any part of the washing machine within range and make a clicking noise at every revolution of the motor.

I am pretty sure you need new belts. You should be able to remove a few screws and open the back cover. Between the pulleys there is a tensioner...loosen that so you can remove the belt easily. replace it with a new belt and adjust the tension.

hope this helps

Sparks coming from behind washer

sparks are never good, and neither are grinding noises. I suspect you might have had a motor failure. remove the belt from the drive (transmission) pulley and set the machine to spin. if you get the gringing sound or more sparks its time for a new motor
