Your hard drive could be experiencing boot files issues. You may have to re-install your operating system again. Or do a repair from the installation disk insert into the CD or DVD Rom and then boot from there. Select open DVD or CD any key at the boot. Then install again and do a repair it will reload all the boot goodies. Or just redo the whole thing back to factory this is what I do when stuff like this happens obviously something got corrupted. This is how I would handle it also save and files if you can once fixed hopefully you did so that you can reload them again when you start from scratch.
Last ditch would be to unplug the computer from its power source then push in the power button and wait until you see a flash. Then plug the computer back in and power up again this sets the hard drive and drivers back to default settings. This is a hard boot process. Sometimes this works more times than not. Hope this assists you thanks for using FixYa! do not forget to vote for me. John

Hi,
Sorry nothing to do your harddrive is dead. you might be able to open the case and replace the harddrive with a new one. Try searching google or youtube on how to do that.

My verbatim model 47562 connects via usb and powers up, but nothing is detected by the computer at all and it does not show up. Need help urgently to recover all data please.

First of all try to:
- use a different usb cable to connect it
- connect it to a different computer
- connect it to a different USB port (preferably one in the back of the PC, not in the front plate)

If still isn't working, could be the electronics of the verbatim HDD case, you can try to open it, take out the hard drive and connect it directly to a desktop pc via SATA inteface. This can be tricky, so let me know if you need further assistance in doing that. You may need an adapter, depending on the HDD interface your desktop pc has
.
If unfortunately your drive is making mechanical repetitive clicking sounds it could be broken. If the data is very important to you, you can rely on companies like this:
http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/
to have it recovered, be warned though that the price will be expensive (about 1500$) so see if it's worth it.
Best regards

well it's good that you checked all of that, nice job always unplug from your PC when done and turn off ok this a must other wise they will tend to mess up like this, but try this ok go to (my computer) when its pluged in and on if you don't see it, then go to (control panel) and into the (admin tools) and then to (computer management) then to (device manager) look under drives and rightclick on your exturnal and go to properties and do an (update driver) if this fails, do a (disk cleanup) on your all drive connected check all boxes and run it. next do a defrag right after that and defrag all devices as well and then unplug your device restart PC and plug back in and see if it will rec. it and if it does go in to it and do the same thing a disk cleanup on it it's self and a defrag again and that should work if not comment back to me ok good luck and have a nice day the fixist !!!

Setting up hard drive to usb connection

Either:
* the USB cable is defective;
* the USB-to-SATA interface is defective;
* the SATA disk-drive is defective;
* the power-supply to the disk-drive is defective;
* the parts are _not_ "defective", they just are incorrectly connected.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting the disk-drive as a "slave" drive into a desktop computer that supports SATA, to see if the drive itself is OK.

Use a multimeter to measure the voltage/amperage emitting from the power-adapter.

Do you hear the disk-drive spinning?
Does it produce any heat, when it is spinning?

Seems to have died -- the power light is on (green) but can't hear the disk spinning and nothing shows up on the screen.

Good news and bad news.

Bad news is that usually indicates a failure of the hard drive inside the case or the driver electronics. If you don not hear or feel the drive spin up that can mean the drive is dead or may not be getting any power. It requires the external power to run. You can check that with a volt meter. It is possible that the connection or the internal board has failed as well which would also mean the drive itself could be fine.

Some good news is that you can replace the drive with any 500 or even 1tb sized sata type hard drive fairly cheaply. It only takes a few minutes to open the case and replace the drive.

If the case is bad then you can buy a cheap $20 and up usb drive case and out the drive in there and be up and running again. Usually if you shop around you can do this cheaper than buying a new complete unit.
You can also connect the drive to your pc as a second sata drive.

You have a few options here, but those really depend on what went wrong.

The hard drive could have been irreparably damaged. The chattering sound is the heads trying to find the beginning of the data sectors and can't. The drive will shut itself off automatically after a predetermined time period.

I assume you can't see it in Windows? When you connect it can you hear the drive spin up? If not then there is a hardware problem - motor failure, jammed platter. If you hear it clicking or clunking then it is likely to be a stuck head or actuator. If so sometimes you can give the drive a sharp **** to and fro to try and spin the platter - don't do to long though. If this doesn't work then you would need the data removed by a data retrieval company.
If the drive does spin freely you may be able to fix by doing in order:
running check disk (properties of drive then tools)
using a data recovery program of which there are a few
using commercial data retrieval company.
Hope this helps
