If I disconnect the outputs from the power supply, will the power supply operate? Is the power supply board itself likely to be the problem? I have disconnected both inverter boards and the fault remains the same

  • John Williams Mar 15, 2011

Your reply was very informative, thank you. Unfortunately I still haven't solved the problem. I have checked all the capacitors with an ESR meter, and all are OK. None are domed. I haven't been able to find any dry solder joints or open circuit fusible resistors either. Can you offer any other suggestions? If I could be certain the fault lies in the power supply board, I would buy a new one, but am just a little fearful that I might purchase the boardand still have the same problem because the fault llies elsewhere. I have disconnected the two inverter boards with no change in symptoms.

    Kind regards,

    John

I'm sorry to be so intermittent in replying to you. I have only just been able to get back onto this job. But I do appreciate very much the helpful comments that you have already made.

In this set the standby power supply in on tjhe main SSB board. It seems to be operating as far as the seconary vol;tage rails are concerned, but not having a schematic I am not able to trace the voltages any further. However I am almost convinced that the main board is faulty, as I have disconnected all other boards and the fault remains the same - the front panel
LED's pulsing at about two times per second. When you press the 'on' button there is no attempt to fire up the main power supply board. I would welcome any comments on those observations. Many thanks.
    John

Hi,

This is an indication of out-of-regulation in the power supply section. The very common caused of this fault is the dried-up/leaky electrolytic capacitor in that section. It will drop the supply from normal voltage and will disable the unit and blinking error appear. Sometimes it has a bulged/dome at the top but not all, it is better that you have a capacitor checker/tester to determine its condition. Also, bad solder joints can produce the same symptom, it is hard to spot, you should use table lamp/portable lamp for finding the cold solder. Secondary reason of fault is the open fuse/fusible resistor in series with the output of regulator IC/transistor, shorted/openRegulator IC/transistor, shorted zener diode(all are in the power supply section) and the microcontroller. Best that you check the output voltage of each regulator to determine where the fault came from and narrow the job.

If you don't have necessary tools and test instruments, and can't do the job yourself, I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the problem. Don't attempt to work in the power supply if you don't know the safety precaution of handling it, there some stored electricity enough to hurt you with a little mistake only.

If you confirmed that the power supply board has a missing voltage and you don't want to troubleshoot it, you may look online for the replacement. Check the availability at ebay.com or shopjimmy.com.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using Fixya.

This is the signal sent by the power source when it has been forcefully shut down by its own protection system. This is what happened: a part inside your tv has failed; when you have tried to start the tv that failed part has started to draw a lot of current; this has lowered the output voltage on the power source dramatically; this in turn has triggered the protection system which has shut down the source.
The only way to fix it is to open the tv, test it, identify the failed part and replace it - since this is a big failure you will have to start checking with the output stages on the power source itself, the electrolytic capacitor are well known for that. At least a good experience in electronics is required for that, you will have to call a certified repairman. In the mean time keep the tv unplugged from the mains, keeping it powered only makes the defect larger.
If you decide to have a go at it yourself here are some basic instructions on what to look for and how to do it

Yes, the board should operate. If it doesn't then the defect is in the power source itself - either try to find out what is wrong with it or just replace it whole.

Manual switch ok but remote not fundtion sharo tv

Be assured that fault does not lie with the remote handset itself. In that case repair or replace it.Remote control system has two parts. One is the remote hand set and the other lies within the TV or other device for which remote controller is being used. The hand set transmits commands in shape of singnals of particular frequency and pulses per second depending on the key pressed. The other part of the remote system lying within the TV receives, decodes and responds according to the commands received in shape of signals of particular frequency and pulses of paricular width and sequence. The remote controller uses invisible infra red light as the carrier of the signal. As the light moves in straight path, no obstacles should block straight line of sight path between the remote hand set (the transmitter) and IR sensor window (part of the receiver). Hence remove the blockage from the front side of the TV.Check if the IR sensor is not defective. Check if the associated circuit and components inside the TV are not defective.Check if the TV has any switch for selecting only manual mode and locking the remote mode.Hope, some sytematic exercise will bear the successful result.

APC 1100CI-IN UPS NOT EORING ON GENERETOR WHAT I DO? PLZ SEND SULATION E-MAIL singhpintu987@gmail.com

Hello Sing,

There is a possibility that your UPS doesn't like the voltage or frequency that the generator is feeding it. As per an APC knowledgebase article, the size of a generator should be 3 to 5 times higher that the total Watt/VA load that it would be supporting.

There are also instances wherein the sensitivity threshold of an APC BackUPS is set too high that a slight change in voltage/sensitivity would cause the unit to switch from online to on battery too frequently. This can be addressed by lowering the sensitivity either by their APC PowerChute Personal Edition Software or via the front panel switch.

If you are going to do it via the software, it needs to be installed on your computer. Prior to downloading it, make sure that your operating system is compatible with it. Suppose that your operating system is compatible, once the program is installed you will need to open it up and look for the Sensitivity option and from there you could select Low, Medium or High.

If you are going to do it via the front panel switch/button the UPS should then be turned off but plugged in to an input source. Press and hold the On button until you see that the LEDs are flashing. Once the LED is flashing, press the button again to set the desired sensitivity. Low sensitivity would show the On Battery LED flashing. Medium is On Battery and Overload LED while High is On Battery, Overload and Replace Battery LED flashing. If you'll see a flashing Online LED it means that you are cancelling or exiting the program mode of the UPS.

Below are some helpful links from APC
*** You will need to login in APC before you can download the software. Choose the correct PowerChute Personal Edition Compatible with your OS and create an account online.

Green light on front rapidly blinks after power outage. No picture, or can't turn on

This unit, when first plugged in or after power interuption takes 70 to 90 seconds for the digital module to boot up. During the time the LED blinks green and the set will not respond to anything. After the appropriate amount of time the blinking should stop and the set should operate normally. If the blinking never stops then you have to have the Digital Module repaired.
