SOURCE: Beyond micro mobile disk BMMDU2 is not recognized

The drive USB interface may be damaged; an external case is available form various vendors for about $20. The drive should pop out and into the new case. If still not recognized, then the ID track on the drive may be compromized - that can happen if the USB is unplugged while it is still writing to the drive. There is drive recovery software out there, like EASEUS that works quite well (they have a demo that you can try free) to see if that would work.

SOURCE: Computer won't recognize hard drive and I have a lot of data

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most portable / external hard drives (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply
Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again.
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues carry on reading.
Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select Computer Management.
Now select Disk Management and expand the window.
Your drive should be listed here, if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding.
If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click Tools and then Error Checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then Start.
This will attempt to fix most minor / common errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.
If you drive was listed but did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. When it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.
If you still have problems with the drive you might want to look at other areas.

SOURCE: plugged neso 320gb into macbook but its not

Hi,

Check the file system on the hard drive. It might be in an NTFS. Mac recognize NTFS as read only drive.

If you plan using it with PC and Mac you should format it using your mac thru disc utility and choose MS DOS.

SOURCE: Hard drive clicks several times when turned on,

I have to say from the sounds you describe the Hard Drive is totally destroyed, the noises you can hear are the mechanical parts inside grinding and clanking together. If the information is critical it may be recovered by a specialist data recovery company, but we are talking £100's even £1000's to do the job, so otherwise I would suggest taking case apart and buying a new hard drive for it.

Sorry its not what you want to hear but it sounds very terminal to me.

The reason the PC can detect a device is that it can see the Interface card that sits between the USB port and the Hard Drive.

Can't open Hitachi Neso 500gb external hard drive asking me to reformat?

you could run the chkdsk utility
click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to recovery any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive there are many ways of running the chkdsk utility

click start right click on my computer you should see your drive usually C: select properties click tools check now tick both boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery on any bad sectors

then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart

it will only schedule on restart if its the Primary hard drive with an operating system on it
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer

for USB drives click start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes

automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start

you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive

I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box

hope it helps

Cannot get my computer to read Hitachi H3640US hard drive. Power on at drive and light on, but when connected computer does not recognize. When I turn drive on, the light does not cycle.

make sure the lead/s that attach to this drive have a secure seating and are not bad/faulty the light on only tells that its getting power it might not be getting enough power you might test the lead/s or
just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again, sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable,
hope this helps

Hitachi SimpleDrive Mini-red wine USB 2.0 Portable Drive - 250GB SDM/250RW This external drive is not recognized by my pc- i'm running windows XP but have tried it on a Vista too, and also beeps once...

If you have tried it on two PCs with the same result, the hard drive is most likely defective. If so, the computer may recognize it being plugged in with a beep but will not recognize it at all as an accessible device.

One thing you can check is if the hard drive was never initialized, meaning that there is empty space but the empty space isn't configured for the operating system to recognize and use. To do this:

- Go to "Start" and "Run" and type in "diskmgmt.msc" and hit "Enter".
- A list will pop-up listing all hard drives on computer. Each row is a physical hard drive.
- The main hard drive for your computer should be listed as "Disk 0" and the local disk in it should be "C:".
- Assuming you have no other hard drive besides the external, the next row should be "Disk 1" and say "Unallocated", which means the hard drive was never initialized. In this case, right-click on it and select "Format". Click next through everything and the external HDD will be formatted so that Windows can recognize it.
- MAKE SURE NOT TO FORMAT LOCAL DISK C:!
- After that, the external HDD should be recognized fine and pull up in "My Computer".

Otherwise, if no other hard drive is listed, the external HDD is most likely defective and you will need to purchase a new one.
