This is very little information to go on, but this could be a drive issue or a hard drive issue.
If you are getting "low virtual memory" messages, I am guessing you have a piece of hardware or software that may need to be updated with a new driver or a patch from the company/manufacturer.
I have seen a lot of this in HP and Dell computers that is caused by the Wireless Utility. This is listed in the system try on the bottom right side of your laptop. If you open up the system tray you may see an icon for your wireless adapter. Hover your cursor over these icons until you see the name of your wireless adapter. It will be something like "Broadcom Wireless adapter" "real tech utility" etc. Once you know what it's called, you can safely go to the control panel/uninstall programs and find the Wirless Utility and uninstall it. This shouldn't cause you any problems because Windows has it's own wireless utility built in. You really don't need the Manufacturer's utility anyway.
Try uninstalling it and seeing if this gets rid of your problem. If not, look for other programs that are running in the system tray. Make sure that they are all shut down by right clicking on them and choosing Exit. (DON"T TURN OFF YOUR ANTIVIRUS!!!).
If this is a hard drive space issue, I would recommend backing up your documents, photos, and videos to an external drive or to DVD's and cleaning up your hard drive that way. Delete the temporary files from your web browser.
You can also click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and find the disk cleanup wizard. Running this will give you an idea of what kinds of files you have on your hard drive that can be cleaned up or compressed to save space.
Another option is to download and use a program called CCleaner. This program will check your entire computer and give you a list of things you can safely get rid of. At that time you can pick and choose what you want to clean up or leave alone.
I would also like more information about the problems you are having if none of this helps. I can give you more help if you can be more specific.

Sir this error is probably give to you during the installation of Windows Vista Ultimate.
Probably the problem lies in the fact that your system's specifications might not be meeting the required for Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate.

  • These are the minimum requirements to run Windows Vista on your computer:
  • [*]800 megahertz (MHz) processor and 512 MB of system memory
  • [*]20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
  • [*]Support for Super VGA graphics
  • [*]CD-ROM drive

But it is recommended that you use the requirements needed for smooth running of Windows Vista, that are:

[*]1 gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

[*]1 gigabyte (GB) of system memory (512 megabytes (MB) for Home Basic)

[*]40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space (20 GB for Home Basic)

[*]Support for DirectX 9 graphics with WDDM and 128 MB of graphics memory (32 MB for Home Basic)

[*]DVD-ROM drive

[*]Audio Output

[*]Internet access

I hope I was of help

Low memory problems

Low memory problems could be low virtual (hard disk) memory.
Hard disk maintenance will free up hard disk memory space.
Hard disk maintenance should be carried once a month to make your computer run efficiently. This removes redundant and temporary files, recovers disk space and speed up hard disk access. Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter - click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse - then click Defragment. When this is completed repeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive. Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially if these tasks have not been for a long time.

Not enough memory

If you have low memory (RAM) then install more RAM.
If you have low memory (hard disk space) the delete unwanted data files and uninstall unwanted programs.
ALSO
Carry out HARD DISK MAINTENANCE

to add memory, for increased virtual memory it is to delete msic data from the hard drive, if it is your hard drive low on space you should purchase another hard drive and make the new hard drive as the slave to store more, on it. if not have a bigger hard drive installed, obtain a USB external hard drive. to add increased more memory you have to open the pc, add another sdram/dimm/ddr memory card.

I believe I have a virus or worm that Norton cannot detect

Ok. How much space do you have free on your hard-drive right now? (I'm assuming that you know how to check this).

If its low, then maybe you didnt free up enough space on the drive. If it is high however, then answer this: is the message you are receiving telling you that you are low on disk space? or is it telling you that it is low on virtual memory space?

if its low on virtual memory, then the problem could be many including 1) virus etc 2) a program is running that is using up more RAM than is avaivable 3) you need more RAM on your system.

if its low disk space, then the problem could be 1) You need to free up more disk space (that may mean getting a bigger hard-drive installed)

Try using an updated virus scanning utility. If it says that you are virus free, then try one of the solutions above.

Virtual memory

Your hard drive is getting to full for it to be used as virtual memory
When normal memory gets used up windows uses the hard drive as memory ans if insufficient room on hard drive is not available you get this message.
Solution.
1) delete programs from hard drive to create more space
2) Install new hard drive and transfer programs to it. creating more room on C drive
3) If hard drive is already partitioned and 2nd partition has a lot of free space transfer Virtual over to it.

Go to Start / Control panel Open The System folder go to "Advanced" "performance settings"
Then to "Advanced " Click on change and set Virtual memory to new disk.
Set maximum and minimum the same at 3 times the amount of normal memory you ave

sounds like the additional memory is not recognized, but the low disk space refers to your hard drive. Either delete some files and defrag or upgrade your hard drive.

Low virtual memory

Virtual memory means you're running out of memory, so it's using your hard drive storage as memory. This is slow. This is an indication you: Have too little memory and need to run fewer programs or install more memory; and also increase the size of your virtual memory, which will also make your disk space tighter. If you are really pinching the computer that badly, you may want to consider buying a new laptop altogether -- the prices have come down a -lot- just in the 2 1/2 years since you bought that. Anyway, to work around the immediate problem:

Your Gateway came with Windows XP Home Edition. Click Start: Control Panels. See if you can find the Performance control panel, possibly by switching to "Classic view." In there, look for the memory tab. Find the virtual memory section. It may be set to "Let Windows decide." change it to at least 1000mb.

You can get a bigger hard drive (after buying an external case to move stuff over) and upgrade your memory to as much as 1.25gb; but you may find those purchases to not be sensible relative to the price of a new laptop. Memory is cheap and relatively easy; the hard drive is more difficult and will set you back at least $100 if you do it yourself.

My laptop keeps coming up with low memory!

Low memory usually refers to the RAM. Low space refers to the Hard Drive. You might have too many applications/programs running at the same time on your laptop. Or have an application or program that is using up too much memory. Viruses/Spyware sometimes do this to put your computer in a state that is not usable.

So what you can do is add more RAM. And check your "Task Manager" for applications and/or programs that is using too much RAM. Look under the column "Mem Usage"
