Not necessarily. This error is a general error for things that do not fall under any other category.

Try resetting the camera, as well as removing and replacing the lens.

Why won't my Powershot A495 take a photo?

iIt seems that the battery is low or not powerful enough to run the camera properly. when the camera notices there is not enough power it will automatically shut down. ensure the battery is fully charged up on the charger and then try it. the battery type is
Canon NB-3L and if the camera is a few years old or has been stored for a long time the battery may need to be replaced.

if all these have been done and still the problem persists i would recommend a dealer have a look at the camera.

to replace battery open slider plate on bottom of camera and flip tab to release the battery pack.

I hope this was useful.

Error99 - Canon EOS40D I have taken out the battery, which the camera on and off, taken off the lens and put it back on...taken out the CF card and put it back in...done everything that has been suggested...

Taking the lens off and back on does nothing unless you clean the gold contacts on both the lens and camera body. Most common method is to use a clean pencil eraser and lightly polish the contacts. Do this while the lens is inverted to help prevent dirt from getting into the lens cavaity.

Also the camera body try to hold the lens cavity downward to help prevent dirt or dust from getting into the camera Gently polish the contacts. You might want to do this with all your lenses and battery contacts.

The Error 99 is Canon's way of saying electrical communications are at fault but they don't tell you which one.

Also doing a camera firmware update often times works the best for this error code.

Try to reset the camera. If you have a menu button, cycle through the menu options to see if there is a RESET command. if so, try it and let me know what happens.

Error 99 is a generic error code and only Canon can diagnose it. But given that it occurs when the flash is set on, it must mean there is a fault with the flash circuit. You may need a technician to replace or repair the circuit. Alternatively, you could purchase an external flash if the first option turns out expensive.

Camera does not go on

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:
