Question about Toshiba HDDR500E04XL 500 GB USB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Have a Toshiba 500GB external hard drive, model: HDDR500E03X and I've been using it for some time on a few of my computers, but lately it hasnt been displaying. I dont know much about Ubuntu to begin with, so I tried booting back to Vista and I received an error saying that the USB bus does not have enough power, and when I click on the error, it gives a list of USB ports, some bolded that could support the device, and others that cant. (It shows like 14 ports, and I only have 4 in the back and 2 in the front though). I tried plugging it into every USB port on my machine, and unplugging all the other USB devices. Oh, and the little grey power light lights up when its plugged in and I can feel the drive spin up some. For Ubuntu, I dont know what exactly this all is, but I see at the very bottom a similar error to what I was getting in Windows: bill@bill-desktop:~$ dmesg | tail -n 100 [ 25.359340] lirc_dev: IR Remote Control driver registered, major 249 [ 25.360689] rc rc0: lirc_dev: driver ir-lirc-codec (mceusb) registered at minor = 0 [ 25.360691] IR LIRC bridge handler initialized [ 25.399963] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready [ 25.402124] alloc irq_desc for 42 on node -1 [ 25.402127] alloc kstat_irqs on node -1 [ 25.402136] forcedeth 0000:00:07.0: irq 42 for MSI/MSI-X [ 25.402360] eth0: no link during initialization. using a Y-cable to trick my computer into providing more power, but that seems to be for people that got that error straight off the bat, and even then the Y-cables seem to have mixed reviews in working. I've tried the hard drive on my desktop, my laptops, and even a friends computer, and no matter what I use, I get variations of not enough power. I dont think it could be an actual power issue, because it always worked before. So... any suggestions about settings that might be wrong? I'm really hoping that the drive itself is ok. (Its about a year and a half old and never got a lot of hard use) And worst case, does anyone know a way to maybe recover something off the drive? There isnt a whole lot of info on it, but it does have some more of the up to date files that I'd prefer to not go back to my backups on. (Oh, and really basic steps please! I'm a nerd in windows, but a lost little boy in the world of Linux)

Sounds like some kind of bad wire, you hope. It could be a power issue as you have stated, I would try it out on several diffrent computers, and you were not wrong in trying the y cable. But if that still doesnt work then not all is lost. I would recomend opening up the caseing and removing the hard drive. Even external drives simply use standard laptop SATA drives. If you have a desktop you can simply plug in the drive while your computer is off, if you do not have xtra spots to plug it up you could temp unpulg your dvd drive to test it. If you have a laptop than you can buy several devices to use a sata drive though usb. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153071&cm_re=usb_sata_docking_station-_-17-153-071-_-Product

This is the one I use the most.
Good luck , if you have any questions let me know

Toshiba, for HP forum, OK.

mine has USB cable and Esata cable and power.
yours has 1 cable new. usb.
what HP computer is it , which one. is it model numbers on the service tag. 1000s of pCs made by HP from 1982 to now, endless list.
i cant guess ever.

500mb (tiny) external drive.
by TOShiba.
listed as obsolete at Newegg. so is not new, (NOS?)

i guess you got it for free? and now the USB cable is missing
that it?
here is one cable, this fits the tiny HDD end
and then fits all PC made, (no dont fit cell phones)
try to know there are many classes of USB connectors
(lots) my guess you lost the comes with it cable
or you PC has no standard full size USB jacks.
some super tiny thin notebooks can not have full sizes USB jacks
so need a special USB mini cable, unseen by me, no help.

The interface in the case would seem to have failed. They are usually not the same standard as those used in a computer.

Does the computer recognize the 500GB Drive when you plug it into your usb port?

Click Start/My Computer and see if your 500GB drive is listed as a device, if not that's a problem.

Try using a different usb port. Also try using the 500GB drive on another computer.

If it's gone belly up, it's not going to work.

Does this happen when you are using it on other computers? Because this Hard Drive does not have external power supply there is a chance that it cuts out from insufficient power. Some of 2.5" external Hard Drives have double USB plug - one for power supply from computer and data transfer and another for additional power supply.

your windows 7 is trying to use the native driver for usb hard drive, but its having a hard time installing it so thats why you are getting it hasnt installed properly, you may want to install a driver specifically from your HDD manufacturer try to look for the driver on the website. you can also use the driver for vista on 7. hope that helps

Toshiba 500gb hard drive is not visible on my computer, the hard drive has a light but it is showing on my computer

Go to computer management by right clicking 'my computer' then selecting 'manage'. Then select disk management. Find your externel hard drive there ( it should be there). Then right click on it, and choose assign drive letter. Just choose a letter in the middle of the alphabet like N or O, then enter. You should see the icon of your external hard drive inside 'my computer'.
