Question about Adcom GFA-5503 3-Channel Amplifier

1 Answer

Can anyone tell me if the Adcom 5503 three channel amp is common ground? I want to use it to power some old school polk SDA 1C as my mains and a CSi5 polk center. Thanks

No reason why not, 3 channel amps used to be the "state of the art" back in the early stereo days. the third channel was produced from the sum of the right and left channels, (the plus side of the right and the plus side of the left were sent to the center channel. produced what was considered at the time a true reproduction of the sound as it was intended to be. your lucky to have this old amp.

How do I eliminate buzz?

Things to check:
1. With your multi meter, measure from left ground to right ground. What do you get? Measure from each input ground to chassis. What do you get there.

2. Get or make a pair of shorting plugs. Plug those into the inputs. Power on. Hum there or gone?

3. Turn the pre-amp on. Connect. Level of hum change with preamp on?

4 additional information. How efficient are your speakers? This is a big amp, high-efficiency speakers may show some noise, while low-efficiency speakers won't.

A trip back to the shop may be indicated, too.

Adcom amp 5802 running hot

It should run hot to touch at idle, about 120F, because it is MOSFET type amplifier.

Adcom gfa 555 blows the 10 amp fuse and the 6 amp fuse on the far right

Any fuse blowing is caused by a shorted component in either the power supply section or main audio amp part. Follow the fuse circuit and see where it leads you. Look around for burnt of damaged parts. Suspect anything sitting on a heat sink. The most common culprit is the audio amp main transistors, especially if someone shorted the speaker leads together. In the power part it could be the transformer, the large Electrolytic capacitors, rectifier, or voltage regulator. Some amps use an IC for amplification and this can blow the fuse.

Adcom 7500, Adcom 5400(bi-amp), Marantz AV-9000, Dakiom HA103

Try just the power amp on ..nothing connected
no Dakiom thingy either. It's a matter of elimination. Start at the output device and work back. Keep the Dakiom out of the loop.
If there's hum with just the Adcom..then it's the ADCOM

Lots of hum from both speakers

Well folks I solved my problem and the amp has never sounded better. It had always hummed and now it close to stone quiet. The secret was it really never a problem with the amp. The problem was the result of either the pre-amp, interconnect cables, or the combinations of them. The solution came when I added a "drain wire" or ground to the cable I was using. There must have been a ground loop or some in-balance that required a wire to be connected to the earth (-) side at the source on the interconnect and then left unconnected at the other or receiving end of the interconnect. Anyway, no more hum, and the solution took some spare wire and solder.
