Question about Vacuums

My overlocker is jammed with the needles in the down position - I have not used it for a while and hve just oiled and cleaned it.

Oh man.

Not sure how to get it unjammed but I know that if overlockers/sergers aren't threaded properly they can jam up like that. The last time that happened to me... broken looper.

Open up the front and start clipping threads... Gently rock the hand wheel to see if it loosens as you get thread released.

Honestly I suspect that your machine has locked up because it's been knocked out of time. If you still have problems take it in and have it serviced.

    When you've trimmed most of the gunged up thread away, try to remove the needles, remove the feed plate screws,gingerly, remove it...DONT PULL LIKE SOMEONE POSSESSED!!...Be gentle.....check especially the loopers.....if the thread is still around them.....scalpel them off....without damaging the loopers.
    Once all clear........Is it free?..............
    If not........lightly oil all the linkages and leave it overnight.....following day work the handwheel gently.......which should free it off....BUT WATCH FOR THE LOOPERS...IF THEY HAVE BEEN PULLED OUT OF TIME....YOU COULD BREAK THEM BOTH....A bit of common sense prevails okay?......Go gently...

Here are some things to check...

I will also include a fuel routing picture
Make sure you are getting spark at the spark plug, to do this:
Remove your spark plug and check to be sure you are getting a bright blue spark at the spark plug.
You do this by grounding the plug on the head of the engine and pulling the crank rope...watching the plug for spark.
If you are getting a nice blue spark then skip A below and go to B.
A...If you do not get a nice blue spark then you may need to replace the electronic module.
Note: If you have to replace the module be sure to measure the position it is in, it is critical to starting.
B...Also take some fine grit sandpaper (not emery) and lightly sand the flywheel where the magnet is located to clean any rust or corrosion from the magnet area.
Then follow the procedure below:

Sounds like you have dirt/debris in your caburetor jets,fuel passages or a diaphgram that is becoming non-flexible.
Check/Clean/Replace your Air Filter, a dirty air filter can make your engine run to rich with fuel.
Note: ALWAYS USE COMPRESSED AIR TO CLEAN YOUR JETS AND PASSAGES, VERY IMPORTANT.
Note:Before you disassemble the carburetor:
Write down on a piece of paper or take a picture of how the linkage attaches to your carburetor for later reference when you go to reinstall your carburetor.
Mark each piece with a awl, or some kind of instrument that will make an alignment scratch before you disassemble the carburetor into separate pieces.
That way you will know which way it goes back together when you reassemble it.
Sometimes you can get by with priming the carburetor or by using a very small shot of starting fluid and letting it run a few times like that, and it will flush the gunk out of the jets,but most of the time you will need to rebuild the carburetor.
Be sure to check your fuel tank for water and dirt/debris, if there is water/debris then you need to clean your tank.
Check you fuel line condition after a while they will degrade and need replacment.
Check/Clean/Replace your fuel filter if you have one, normally they are located in the fuel tank of weedeaters.
When you remove your fuel lines from the carburetor be sure to make a drawing to how the lines are connected to the carburetor or take a pictue for later reference.
Normally the big line will be the line the fuel filter is connected to inside of the tank.The smaller of the two lines is the return to the fuel tank from the carburetor after it is pumped thru the carburetor by the primer bulb.
Make sure you are using fresh fuel...and oil mix if your using a two cycle weedeater with the oil to the right mixture and not too much oil as it can cause hard starting.
If the chainsaw/trimmer is over a couple of years old, then I recommend that you buy and install a new carburetor repair kit,because the diaphragm will get hard and that will cause it to be hard to crank.
The diaphgram may look good and flexible, but it can be deceiving and not act as a fuel pump as it should because it has become too hard and will cause hard starting,start and run and shut off, etc.
When you clean your carburetor, I recommend that you use a laquer thinner type cleaner to clean and dissolve the laquer build-up in the float and needle jet passages.
Be sure to remove all plastic and rubber parts before using the laquer thinner because it can dissolve the plastic parts and render them unuseable.
Be sure to use COMPRESSED AIR to blow out all the fuel and air passages.The higher air pressure is needed to blow some of the trash/debris from the fuel or air passages.
Be careful when blowing out the passages, because there are sometimes small rubber type seats in the bottom of some of the passages.
Keep in mind that the float (if you have one) for the carburetor must be level when you go to reassemble the carburetor or follow the instructions you get with the carburetor kit, or you could also ask the parts man that you get your kit from.
When you clean your carburetor and remove the jet screws, you will first need to lightly seat the jet screws.
But before you lightly seat the jet screws count the number of turns it takes to seat the jet screws from their original position.
Be sure to mark the turns down on a piece of paper.
That way when you put the jets back in, you know to lightly seat them first and then turn them back out to their original position before you started.
Note:
The little spring inside of the carburetor goes under the float arm.
That is where your fuel inlet needle/float valve is located...on the arm at the end.
Normally there is a small indetion in the carburetor base and a small protrusion on the underneath of the float arm where the spring will be in the right postion for installation.
The spring will set in the indention and you will install the float arm with the needle/float valve and float rod into position over top of the spring,you will push down until it is in position and then you can tighten the screw that holds the float arm assembly in position.
Once you have your carburetor cleaned/rebuilt that should solve your problem.

Hi I have a Janome 419S or 423S, the problem seems to be my hook race unit keeps getting loose and then the thread jams up. What can be done? Please


A jammed machine is caused by thread being caught in thehook. Remove the upper thread and the bobbin case, turn the hand wheel towardsyou (counterclockwise) by hand and remove any thread in the bobbin case area. Alwaysturn the hand wheel towards you. Turning the hand wheel away from you(clockwise) can cause the machines timing to become unaligned and jam yourmachine. Also, always make sure the presser foot is in the down position beforeyou start sewing. Sewing with the presser foot in the up position will jam yourmachine in the bobbin case. If youhave an older model sewing machine with a shuttle hook, then you can alsofollow these: 1. Disconnect the sewing machine from any power source.Loosen the thumb screw on the left side of the sewing machine body and removethe cover to expose the needle bar. This is the shaft that extends down andthat you attach a needle to for sewing. Open the shuttle race and remove the bobbinand bobbin case. 2. Turn the hand wheel toward you until the needle hasreached the lowest point of the stroke. The hook should be at the top of itsstroke inside the shuttle race. Loosen the set screw for the needle bar on theupper part of the machine, this is located on the needle bar bushing (thecollar that the needle bar slides through when making a stitch). The needle barshould slide easily up and down. 3. Turning the wheel again, adjust the position of the tipof the needle so that the upper part of the needle eye is just below the bottomedge of the hook inside the shuttle race. Once in position, re-tighten the setscrew on the needle bar bushing. Do not allow the needle bar to slip whiledoing this. 4. Replace the bobbin and bobbin case and close the shuttlerace. Thread and plug in your machine. Using a sizable scrap of cloth, sew aseam to check to see if there are any skips in the stitching. If there arestill skips re-adjust the timing again until you can sew without any skipped stitches. 5. When proper timing has been achieved replaces the coveron the needle bar and tighten the thumb screw. Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

I will offer a few more things to check and repair/replace, maybe there is a few things that you missed.

Wife has Kenmore 385.12314. Regular use. Normally cleaned and oiled. Needle goes down, but bobbin thread doesn't catch. Needle at bottom of stroke and "half moon" is on top, needle...


Make sure the needle is in the machine correctly- all theway up into the needle bar, make sure that it is threaded correctly, etc. Ifthis all checks out ok, take the bobbin case out of the machine. There are twoears on either side of the bobbin case- turn the left one to the left and theright one to the right. Remove the silver ring, and inspect the piece of metalthat the ring came off of (looks like a circle with the top cut off). You haveto locate the hook which is the piece that looks like a half moon inside thebig round metal piece. Locate the tip of it, turn the hand wheel toward youuntil the needle is in the lowest position, at this point the tip of the hookshould be flush with top of the left side of the cut off circle. If this is notso, your machine needs to be re-timed. If that is the case, I would need to seea picture of the bottom of the machine so that I am able to determine whatneeds adjusting. Make sure you're turning the hand wheel in the proper direction-- the proper direction isthe one that will feed fabric forward under the presser foot.

Make sure the needle is facing in the correct direction -- stitches don't form,or skip badly when the needle is turned around.

Put the bobbin in the bobbin case (right way around) leaving a 2-3" tail.

Thread the top of the machine correctly, leaving a 3-4" tail afterthreading the needle.

Hang on to the end of the upper thread, and use the hand wheel to drop theneedle... continue to turn the hand wheel to raise the needle. Pull on the endof the needle thread and a loop of bobbin thread should come up.

Hold BOTH threads behind the presser foot when starting a seam to preventthread jams.

I have needles snapping and bobbin tangle


Try to repair in this order.

1) Your machine likely needs oil. Especially put a few drops of oil on the outside edge of your bobbin holder.

2) Try replacing your needle if you have some spares. If you are using a decorative thread (metalized) use a needle with a teflon lining on the eye (called metallic thread needle).

3) Try buying a better quality thread. Do not use generic thread in a sewing machine (i.e. "made in cheap country" with no brand name)

I have an Elna 745 serger/overlock machine. Whenever I'm doing a double cover stitch hem, when I'm at the end, the thread release lever does not release the thread. To release it, I have to cut the...


There are two methods to release the cover stitch with sufficient slack in the thread. Since you are using the thread release lever, did you set the Brown tension dial to zero? Before changing the tension, you have to first lower the needles to their lowest position in the fabric with the hand wheel and then turn the hand wheel backwards to bring the needles to the highest point in the cycle.

The other method may work better for you. Bring the needles to the highest point in the cycle and lift the presser foot. Then slide a thin object (a sewing ruler, for example) between the presser foot and the feed dogs and pull the needle thread towards you. Cut the needle threads Then pull the fabric away from you before cutting the looper threads.

Both of these options are described on page 98 of the manual, which is available from Elna. Kirby G4 Toe-Touch Control pedal jammed


Flip the Kirby over,and you will find screws that hold the front axle in place.Remove the screws and the front axle.Debris may be caught in the mechanism.Clean the debris out,and use WD-40 to lubricate the mechanism.May be able to do this without removing the axle,but removing it allows for better cleaning or for identifying broken or missing parts.
