Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

I have a Eureka Power Plus vacuum, model 4702, type A. To start off, it never really had great suction. Marginal at best. Then today I was vacuuming and smelled something burning and turned off the vacuum. At that point, smoke started pouring out from the bottom of the vacuum so I layed it on it's side and the smoke cleared but I never found the source. Is it safe to turn on again after I let it cool down or is my vacuum "shot?"

If it is the motor it may smell electrical and the motor is likely shot. It's very possible it needs a new belt. Your model has a stretch belt and they should be replaced at least every six months (even if it's never been used) because belts need to be stretched so far to be installed they will lose elasticity and slip on the shaft which can cause the belt to melt.

SOURCE: Burning smell/lost suction

Is the brush roll turning while on the carpet. If the belt is old, then it has stretched and will slip causing a rubber smell. But if it is an electrical smell, then your motor is failing and will need to be replaced.

SOURCE: Burning smell and smoke

I ran into a scenario similar to this at work. With the burning smell and smoke combined, it leaves only one problem remaining; the motor. The motor and the pulley that enables the belt to spin could be malfunctioning (causing friction between the 2 parts) and thus causes the burning smell and the smoke. I'd highly advise not to touch either part after having the unit on (YOU WILL BURN YOURSELF).

The only other likely possibility is to make sure there aren't any hairs caught in or around the motor and the bearings of the agitator.

SOURCE: Eureka Boss - no suction in upright postion

when mine does that I find that the hose is not connected properly where it comes off to use the attachments.
If there is suction there, it is a straight shot to the floor unless it is loose where it fits together.

Why doesn't suction work on eureka

The hoses may be clear but debris could be clogging the point where it is discharged into the bag or container. There also could be a debris clog at the intake.

Low suction on Eureka spinduster vacuum cleaner

The belt has stretch enough so as to not drive the brush roll under load. Try a new belt.

Smell/suction

The brushroll may spin when looking at it but stops when pressure of the floor is applied. The belts stretch, so they look fine but are not. The smell - if it's a rubber smell - would also be the belt. Some, or most, brushrolls can get hair in the ends that could also cause a smell and belt problem.
