It SHOULD be fn+f10. You might have to install a driver to get this to work, try entering the full model of your laptop here and see what if there are any chipset/keyboard/touchpad etc. drivers that would enable the function keys to work properly. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProductList.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=96222

How do you adjust britness on the screen?

You can adjust the armada's screen brightness by pressing the "Fn" key and F10 key simultaneously. If this helps FixYa, please share the love and let me and others know by providing a bit of feedback. Happy Computing!

Video screen on a compaq nx5000 is very faint. Suspect an inverter problem.

Compaq armada e5oo laptop...right side of screen looses brightnes

It sounds like the inverter on your LCD screen is going bad on you.  You can sometimes find inverters for cheap on eBay, but you will need to get the part number from Compaq to be sure that you are buying the correct thing, and I usually say not to buy any that ship from Asia even though they may be cheaper, as many times they are knock offs.

Usually most laptops has blue/white function keys top on keyboard they can be used together with Fn button that is left bottom side of keyboard. For example on my laptop with F4 and F5 together with Fn can adjust brightness.

How can I adjust brigthness using other option than F9, because it does not work

Per the user manual, the brightness is toggled by holding the Fn Key and pressing F10. You post made no reference to the Fn Key being pressed. If using an external keyboard press scroll lock twice then F10.

Compaq Armada M700, Dim Screen

There is a dimmer function that is part of the keyboard on most notebooks. You use the Fn key and some other key (Mine is F1 and F1) Look for what looks like Sun in blue print on the key. You should find 2 of them. One will be the brightness up and the other brightness down. You can try those.

More likely, something has come loose internally.
1. It could be the backlight for the screen is broken or a connection loose. You should be able to see the light when you look at the side of the display.
2. The AC power connector may have been broken and the notebook is only on battery power. By default most systems are dimmer when on battery power. Check to see if your charge indicator light is on. If not, that may be the problem.

I hope this helps.

Screen display

It's hard to find a Compaq manual their site, but they indicate you'll find this in the help files on your computer.
This is usually done with a combination of keys-look for the Fn key and a key that looks like a sun symbol. It may have an arrow pointing up or down. Use these keys together to change the brightness.

Boot up with no operating system

When the system starts, hold the F10 key and go into BIOS and set CD Rom as 1st Boot device (in Boot Order). Because most Compaq's would put the BIOS in a hidden NON-DOS partition on the hard drive, you may have to get an OEM recovery disk for that model. Because there is no BIOS to go to, the machine doesn't know it has a CD, HD or Floppy to go to. A boot floppy/CD is no help. Alternative 1: With another desktop and IDE to Laptop HD connector, FDISK (make active partition and hidden partition [5mb]), Format both, copy the cabs from WinME CD to c:\windows\options. Alternative 2: Find the COMPAQ OEM CD for that model. Since there was no exact model number Click here Please indicate whether this is helpful or not.
