My Samsung HLP4663W 46 in was making a buzzing noise for several months. I know it could have been either the fan(s) or the color wheel, but I never opened it up to determine which it was. Now the TV quit...

Great reasoning work! In fact, the lamp will not light if the color wheel does not spin-up. Fans will not stop the process of lamp ignition. Instead, a fan will be detected and a message will appear on the screen telling which fan has stopped. You need to have the color wheel replaced.

Is the color wheel fine if it is spinning? Can you see any light from the dlp lamp when the screen is off? I had a service guy come by to fix my dlp and he replaced the bulb with no luck. He said it was...

First You can look on the rear of the set and see the lamp light shine through the lamp door vents when the set is on. Second you need to replace the whole color wheel before the set will work. Third Color wheels may spin but not at the correct rpm and may shut down the tv and sometimes color wheels will emit a high pitched whine or buzzing sound indicating that the bearings in the motor are wearing out. But now that you have to replace the color wheel you will need to adjust the index delay in the service menu. I suggest having a factory trained tech repair the set.

Looking for lights....

You can find replacement parts for this model from the following Sony OEM parts distributor. Here's the links to order the original Sony blue CRT, green CRT, and red CRT (the 3 "light bulbs") for this model from that major parts distributor if needed:

Sony KPR-53CX35 Replacement Part Green CRT Bulb / Lamp

Broken edge of bulb- TV won't work

The color wheel was the cause of the loud whining noise. The only item in the set under pressure that could possibly pop is the lamp. The fact that you have the 3 lights on is the lamp failure indicator. The lamp driver or ballast can also fail and give the same light error but I have never had one to pop.I would replace the lamp for sure. Also the lamp as you know sits right in front of the color wheel so perhaps it popped and fragments of the lamp ended up on, near or around the color wheel

Touch lamp repair

Double check that the replacement bulb is good. If it is, then when the old bulb blew, it probably shorted and destroyed the touch sensor. The touch sensor is replaceable and is usually located in the base of the lamp. You may have to peel off some felt on the base to expose the screws that hold the base on. Touch sensors are generally available at hardware stores, electrical supply stores, or lighting stores and are around $10-15. They are easy to wire. Just follow the instructions and observe the way the old one was wired. You may need some small wire nuts if they don't come with the new sensor.

Antoniette, I had the same problem, however, I heard a noise like the shattering of glass. After replacing the lamp without resolution, I took the guts out only to find that the color wheel shattered. I ordered a new one myself for $90 and will attempt to replace it, it definitely beats the $450 service fee that I was going to be charged. At worse, I'll return the lamp and color wheel and contribute that $450 to a new 56" DLP with a 5-year warranty. You can find well documented instructions online, I used http://kploymp.net/dlp_cw.aspx.

How long does a lamp/bulb of a Toshiba DLP 46HM95 46 in last?

Your bulb may be blowing because of airflow issues or power cycling issues, first does your outlet get switched off at any point in time? if so you may be killing the bulb before it cools, if you turn the set on/off alot and or restart it after off quickly this could lead to permature bulb failure, if the original lamp was not replaced with a proper lamp to match the ballast it could blow the bulb. If your tv is too near a heat vent or the airflow thru the set is not adequate it could blow the bulb.
