Question about Fantom Titanium Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have an external TFD500U16 and it has been running fine for the last 3 years now all of a sudden my desktop no longer sees it. I get a blue light and hear the drive spin but my disktop doesn't see it anymore. I have connected the drive to my laptop and the same thing happens it spins but is not recognized. I have tried different usb ports on each system any suggestions will be helpful.

Either the hard drive inside the case is bad, or the board the controls the drive is bad. The only way you can find out if the drive is good is to open up the case and remove the hard drive, then plug it into another case you buy at your local computer supply store. However depending on the case this might break the case, it should be used as a last resort for saving your data.

I removed the hard dive and plugged it into an sata ti usb 2.0 adapter and its working well.
So the problem was the board that controls the drive. The hdd is a Western digital model WD5000AACS. Later on I will probably install it as a backup drive in the PC.

My computer does not recognize the Fanton titanium drive. It was working properly for last 2 years and contains and all of a sudden I cannot see it's drive location once I connect it to multiple computers in my household.

I suspect that one of my teenagers "moved" a file instead of copying it and somehow corrupted the file structure. By the way, I have already tried to see if it is a problem that can be fixed by assigning a drive using Disk MGMT. It is not recognized there either.

Is this an inbuilt drive or an external drive? If you're using USB, it needs a USB connection. It shouldn't need drivers as the computer will automatically detect a hard drive.

Have you tried connecting to a completely different computer to see if that recognised it?

Should I bother trying to fix this laptop or is it time for new?

it would be cheaper to get a net book and an external hard drive you can get a good one for about 200$ and an external drive enclosure for like 20 and a used hard drive for like 30-40

My dell optiplex GX 260 suddenly restarted on its own a few times then it does not start anymore. The power indicator on motherboard doesnot light up. Power box burnt?

Possibly, there was a serious problems with capactiors that affected all major manufacturers a fre years back whereby the caps didnt last more than 2 to 3 years. SOme lasted longer before blowing. Dell could help you establish if yours was affected. It does sound like the power supply, see if the fan is spinning on it. If not they are easy to replace and can be purchased on ebay. Mail me if you need the part number and ill see if i can help you. m.g.woodruff@googlemail.com

External Hard Drive isn't recognized on new Vista Computer

here are several possibilities
Bad Cable - Well it is probably unlikely, but I would first try another USB cable just to make sure the cable is not damaged.
2. Power Supply - Try another power supply if you have or can borrow one
3. Controller Failed – The Controller inside it has failed.
4.Drive Failure – The Hard Disk inside has failed. Drives typically have an average 5 year lifespan, some last longer and some can fail much sooner. Unfortunately, you rarely have any warning, thus the need for backups.

Lexmark E250dn laser printer

Reinstall the drivers and see if it works.

Otherwise unplug the printer from the power and leave it without power for 10 minutes. Than plug it back in and let me know if it helped.

Drive Being Recognized as Removable Disk

Same issue with my 500 GB TFD500U16. A little more description is that my PC is detecting the power when turning on the drive and the HDD itself is spinning up. Also the Blue light that normally indicates HDD activity by turning Red no longer shows activity but just stays Blue. This indicates that the data side of the HDD is not seated properly. Since mine is out of Warranty, I took it apart and found this to be the exact case.
! ! ! ! Please perform this at your own risk ! ! ! ! Especially if your warranty is still in effect! ! ! By loosening the HDD mounting screws inside that will allow the connection to seat properly and data to be seen.
