64-bit central processing unit is one that can support a higher amount of system resources than a 32-bit counterpart.
It has the ability to both recognize and use more amounts of available system memory to go along with its faster processing speeds.
If you want to install a 32-bit operating system on a computer with a 64-bit processor, you can--but you won't be taking full advantage of what your system has to offer you.

Place the installation disc for your 32-bit operating system in your computer's disc drive.
This can be one that you've purchased, as in the case of Microsoft's Windows operating system, or one that you've downloaded from the Internet, in the case of the Linux operating system.
Shut down your computer. Once completely off, turn it back on again.

Click "Next" to continue through your 32-bit operating system's setup program.
You will be asked to read the "TOS," or terms of service.
This is important legal information that you should read in detail, as it informs you of exactly what you're agreeing to by installing this operating system.

Specify any settings changes you want to make to the way your operating system is installed.
From these screens you can also input personal information into your operating system, such as your name or business information, which will save you the trouble of having to do it later when you install utilities.
Click "Install." The 32-bit operating system's setup program will format your hard drive, erasing all data on it.
It will then place the necessary operating system files on your computer.
This can take an hour or more depending on the operating system being used.
Once this process is finished, allow your computer to automatically restart.

Do I need to download new bios for my acer wg43m motherboard in order to be able to install more ram?

A 32-bit operating system is limited to around 3.5 GB's of Ram Memory. You will have the ram memory installed, but it will only recognize 3.5GB.

A 64-bit operating system will recognize up to 128GB's of ram memory.

Windows XP Home is a 32-bit operating system.
Windows XP Pro had a 32-bit version available, and a 64-bit version available.

This also goes for the various Vista operating systems, and Windows 7 operating systems.

LOOK, and see.

1) If it is Windows XP Pro;

Left-click on Start, then right-click on My Computer.
Left-click on Properties at the bottom of the list.

What does it state? If 64-bit is not shown, it is a 32-bit operating system.

2) If it is a version of Vista, or Windows 7;

Left-click on the Windows logo button. Right-click on Computer.
Left-click on Properties.

Again, if it is a 64-bit operating system, you can bet Windows will state it.

For additional questions post in a Comment.

I purchased Windows 7 Home premium. It came with two installation disks. One 32 bit and one 64. Since my computer was a 32 bit machine that is the disk I used. Since the I have purchased a new computer...

You have to understand that you only paid for one installation whether it was 32 or 64. But you can google operating systems and a lot will pop up. Ubuntu is popular and free.

Why does windows 7 not read my lexmark 2500 printer

Maybe the driver installed is not compatible with the computer's operating system. I suggest you install the Windows 7 Lexmark X2500 driver from the Lexmark website. You may need to uninstall the existing driver before installing the new driver. To download: first, check if your Windows 7 is running on 32-bit or 64-bit operating system by going to the Start menu > right click on Computer > Properties. Then download the driver using this link: http://bit.ly/cvqoTw (for 32-bit) or this link: http://bit.ly/cr1Nhm (for 64-bit). Check if it's working now. If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to contact Lexmark technical support. Thanks.

Hard drive not found

Wayneard is correct. When you install a brand new hard drive as the ONLY hard drive in the computer, there is no operating system loaded. The computer will try to boot from the hard drive and stop. Switch your boot order to have the CD boot first, and be sure you have the operating system installation CD in your CD drive.

Also, double check your hard drive connections. Be sure it is in the "master" position on the hard drive cable. If there is a connection problem, the system will complain after CD start that there is no hard drive available to install the operating system on!

Good luck.

I can't to install Windows vista 64 bit within a 32 bit

hi,
If you have a 32-bit version of Windows XP and want to install a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you must boot the computer from the 64-bit Windows Vista DVD and then perform a custom installation of Windows Vista. Back up data before you start the custom installation.
