Do the brake lights come on when applying the brakes?
If so then the remote start could be causing the issues or the interlock may have gone bad

Could be a faulty brake light switch on the brake pedal. I would check it first.

your Break lights wont work if the connecting wires from break to the light is loose or got disconnected.. its only a minor fault nothin much to worry...!!

Your turn signal switch may be the problem. The brake light circuit runs through the turn signal switch. Do the basics and check for a blown fuse, broken light bulb or bulb holder.

the break light wire on the lumina runs through the blinker switch or multifunction switch on the colum.. check there as well as at the tail light sockets. on the late 90s gm cars the sockets had a tendancy to rot away... use a test light at the brake light wire in the trunk and have a friend apply the break. if there is power then may have to get new tail lights. or replacement bulbs.

you either have all blowed lights or have a blowed fuse. also some cars mainly the newer ones have problem with the brake light wiring, so call the main company of the vehicle make and ask if they have recalls on that specific year model. hope this helps you out.

u have a problem with ur break light switch,,, its at the brake pedal and is threaded into the brake pedal bracket, if u have a new one and are going to replace it, disconnect the connector, loosen the 14mm nut and remove the switch by turning it counterclockwise...install ther new switch by turning it clockwise and tightening the 14mm nut then reconnect the connector...be sure to adjust the switch or else the brake lights will stay on at all times...draining ur battery and possibly burning out ur bulbs...this also releases ur trans from park to put into gears

dont worry all you need to do is just change the 2 sensors found onlong top side of the break peddle. it be cheaper if you could get it from the junkyard from even a mecury contour or mystic, both cars have all the same parts as the cougar , try it i did.
