Brother mfc-490cw maintenance mode

Is it a new Ink Cart? If not they have a bad tendency to dry out very quickly (even when not used) Some printers will use a combination of all their ink to create black when it runs low. Usually the first color to dry out is the Magenta. I would start by running a cleaning cycle 5-6 times and hope it can pull some ink through the ink head. Otherwise, go get a new cartridge and try it again. Ink Jets are a pain and the Carts are quite expensive, that why the machines price point is so low.

One other thought, you might try a Q-tip very lightly soaked in alcohol and gently rub it on the bottom of the Magenta Cartridge, it will remove any dried out in on the bottom of the cartridge and might make it work. But, WARNING....to much alcohol is a BAD thing and will cause a terrible mess with ink everywhere and could possible cause printer problems.

Good Luck.

I installed a new black ink cartridge(lc61bk) on a brother mfc-495cw and now nothing is printing.

Check out if you've installed it correctly. Also check out other ink cartridges, are they empty? If yes you won't be able to print anything. However, if all ink cartridges are OK then try to reset the printer or reinstall the drivers. You can find help in MFC 495cw users manual

It is showing "can not

Hi Advancesys,

I'm a new user and I don't know how to send you a link to my post from 15 minutes ago, so I am re-posting here.
-------------------------------------------------
I don't know if this will solve your exact "cannot detect" problem, but it solved mine.

Problem: Cannot detect
Like other posters in this forum, I replaced all four of my ink cartridges at the same time when my MFC-490CW said they were all low. After I installed 4 (third-party brand) cartridges, the display said something like "Cannot detect ink cartridge, re-insert slowly" and indicated the cyan cartridge. Like many others, I tried this many times. I tried turning the power off, unplugging the power plug from the wall, different sequences of cartridge insertion, etc. None of this helped.

Solution: Clean the sensor
Much has been written here and in other places on the 'net about the trick of using electrical tape on the ink cartridge in the ink-level sensor window. I remembered seeing a good deal of ink on the outside of the cartridge as I removed it. This leaky ink cartridge had somehow coated either the sensor or it's associated light with blue ink, rendering it unable to detect the presence of a cartridge. I was able to clean the sensors with some Q-tips and isopropyl alcohol (not the optimum technique, but it was effective). Just to be sure, I swabbed the other sensors as I had removed all the cartridges to make room for my fat fingers. All sensors swabbed clean. The cyan was the only one covered in ink. I swabbed the cyan sensors with the alcohol until they were clean (maybe 20 Q-tips all total). I carefully dried the area with the Q-tips and let the alcohol evaporate for a minute then re-installed the ink cartridges...and printed a document. Yay!

As I said, this may not solve your particular "cannot detect" issue, but give it a try. It is a little messy but I'm back in action and hey, tattoos are hip. I just won't tell anyone why they're all the same color of blue and why I tattooed my fingers.

Good luck!

Where do the ink cartriges on a brother mfc 5460cn fo

Your machine is equipped with an ink dot

counter. The ink dot counter automatically

monitors the level of ink in each of the 4

cartridges. When the machine detects an ink

cartridge is running out of ink, the machine

will tell you with a message on the LCD.

The LCD will tell you which ink cartridge is low

or needs replacing. Be sure to follow the LCD

prompts to replace the ink cartridges in the

correct order.

Even though the machine tells you that an ink

cartridge is empty, there will be a small

amount of ink left in the ink cartridge. It is

necessary to keep some ink in the ink

cartridge to prevent air from drying out and

damaging the print head assembly.

a Open the ink cartridge cover.

If one or more ink cartridges are empty,

for example Black, the LCD shows

Ink Empty Black and

Replace Ink.

b Pull the lock release lever down and

take out the ink cartridge for the color
shown on the LCD.

c Open the new ink cartridge bag for the

color shown on the LCD, and then take

out the ink cartridge.
d Remove the protective yellow cap (1).

Note

If the protective yellow caps come off

when you open the bag, the cartridge will

not be damaged.

e Each color has its own correct position.

Insert the ink cartridge in the direction of

the arrow on the label.

f Lift each lock release lever and push it

until it clicks, and then close the ink

cartridge cover.

g If you replaced an ink cartridge, the LCD

may ask you to verify that it was a brand

new one. (For example,

Did You Change Blck?) For each

new cartridge you installed, press 1

(Yes) to automatically reset the ink dot

counter for that color. If the ink cartridge

you installed is not a brand new one, be

sure to press 2 (No).

If you wait until the LCD shows

Near Empty and Ink Empty, the
machine will automatically.

MFC-490CW does not print black ink, what can i do to fix this?

does it print in any of the other colours? if not, it sounds like one cartridge is empty and the printer will not print until you have full cartridges.

My brother 490CW won't print black ink

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, the printer started using all of my yellow ink.
Look at the black cartridge and check to see if the opening on the side is as it should be( a little ink is able to come out of it).
If not, then you need to replace the cartridge with another one.
This fixed my problem after a lot of wasted time with me trying to install the drivers again, which was not the problem.
Clean it a few times with the black only , then check the print, it may take 5-10 times.

Black ink is not dispensing

There may be an air bubble in the black tubing, it will take several more cleaning cycles to clear. You can tell it to clean only the black and save the other inks.
