Question about HP Compaq Presario SR1617CL PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have HP Comaq Presario SR1617CL Desktop PC, part number ED870AA with a Samsung SpinPoint P80 SP1604N - hard drive - 160 GB - ATA-133, I would like to upgrade to a 500GB hard drive. I have a ASUS A8AE-LE HP/Compaq motherboard name: AmberineM-GL6E it has SATA hook up, should I stay with IDE/PATA or go SATA HD. If SATA where do find adapter for power hook up and how does it hook up. My next question is what ever HD I end up with can I put XP PRO OS on it, which I already have unused, and legal as a main HD and keep my 160 HD with XP Home as a slave? I went to HP and found all the S/W and downloads for this PC which I believe I need for new 500 HD and OS. I have also replace sempron processor with an Athlon 64 and upgraded from 512 2x256 memory ram to 4GB 4x 1GB PNY DDR RAM, also replaced 250W power supply with 400W. All help will be greatly appreciated.

XP cannot be installed natively on an SATA disk without the appropriate driver which must be loaded during the install - an extremely complicated maneuver. The best way to deal with that is to just add the new SATA hard disk: install XP on the PATA and use the new SATA for your files as a separate partition. The adapter cable can be bought for about $5 from the same shop as the hdd.
All the other modifications are just fine - just remember , the RAM will not be fully recognized and used because of the limitations of the 32bit XP.

Can i put a samsung non sata sp1604n hard drive in an hp pavilion p6310y desktop as a slave drive ?? the sp1604n is not a sata type hard drive, but the master that came with it is. the master is a western...

Unless the motherboard in your system is different from the one shown on HP's site, the answer is no, you can't install the drive. At least you can't install it without additional hardware, which I'll describe in a moment. It looks like this board only has SATA connections for drives, which is becoming more common. So there is no conventional (i.e., old-fashioned) IDE connector for the data cable used by your Samsung drive. There's no place to plug the in the drive.

What you'll need if you want to use a parallel IDE drive is an expansion card like this one. There are many similar cards; I'm just using this one as a sample. The card installs in one of the PCI-E slots on your motherboard, and it provides the IDE connection you need. In addition to the card, you'll need an 80-conductor ATA-133 IDE cable.

With SATA drives, there isn't the master/slave designation since each SATA device has a direct connection to the motherboard. With the parallel cable, you can have two devices connected, so one needs to be designated as the master and the other one as the slave. The master is the drive connected to the plug physically at the end of the cable, and the slave is the middle plug. When you install your Samsung drive, set it for "master" or "single" drive as required. Some drives have a special jumper setting when used alone, while others need to be set as master even if there is no slave drive present. The jumper settings are usually marked on the drive, or you can check at Samsung's website.

Hope this has helped. Thanks for using Fixya!

My computer will boot to my samsung SP1604n Hard drive but there won't be and windows screen. how do i fix this?

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test or replace all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty

Just need a samsung sp1604n driver

Any drivers needed will be on the samsung website, but unless you are using an old motherboard and windows xp (may need drivers loaded off a floppy drive) no drivers are needed.
If you are using Vista, your problem may lie in your motherboards bios, it may need an update

Lost 12GB

check the partition table, maybe their unspecified disk, delete all and recreate a new partition. Otherwise use create the remaining as a logical drive so that you will not re-installed the Operating system including the driver of your hardware
