This hard drive needs to be repartitioned and formatted first then you should see actual amount. You can do this when selecting the drive in windows 7 installation

Make sure the drive is listed in the BIOS matching your serial, model number, etc incase you purchased this from ebay or second hand.

What I would do in this situation is a complete format of this drive to where it is totally blank. Active Kill Disk is what I use, the software will allow you to do a complete format. You will also need to download utorrent free torrent software Click Here This is what you need to download torrent files.

It is obvious that the drive is filled up somewhere. And you need to do a complete format. Bringing it back to its 250 gig capacity. Then install Windows back on it again. Making sure it is set to Master the settings on the front of the hard drive that show which jumper setting for the drive set it to Master. The master drive is common for Windows installs.

Now the other possibility is that the hard drive is bad or corrupted. This is possible. If that is the case then you will have to replace the drive if it will not take after a complete format. Lets hope this is not the case. Please do not forget to vote for me, thanks for using FixYa! John

I replace 250 gig to 500 gig. can it affect the processor, hard disk drive and other parts of my laptop?

No it won't BUT the BIOS may not support a 500 Gb hard disk, it will see it as a smaller capacity hard drive.

Greetings.

files bigger than 4 gigs cannot be save on fat32 drives. NTFS file system is capable of saving files bigger than 4 gigs.

The MAC - to PC did nothing to change it. It did not change while she look it at her pc.

If u want to be able to copy files bigger than 4 gigs to your drive, change the format to ntfs.

  • It is easy to convert partitions to NTFS. The Setup program makes conversion easy, whether your partitions used FAT, FAT32, or the older version of NTFS. This kind of conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition). If you do not need to keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition, it is recommended that you format the partition with NTFS rather than convert from FAT or FAT32. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition and allows you to start with a clean drive. Whether a partition is formatted with NTFS or converted using the convert command, NTFS is the better choice of file system. For more information about Convert.exe, after completing Setup, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. In the command window, type help convert and then press ENTER.

Thank you for your help last time

256 mb of memory is not very much. It's the bare minimum you can get by with running Windows XP. Adding more would certainly be an improvement.
Only 1 gig of free space left on an 80 gig hard drive is not much room for Windows to work with. I would definitely try to get rid of or back up some files to make more room. You should also run a system clean up and do a defragmentation of the hard drive.

You should keep your anti virus software up to date if you have one installed. If not you can go HERE and run Trend Micro's Houscall on your PC. Viruses and Spyware will bog down a system and cause it to run extremely slow.

Backup hard drive to an external hard drive

"what the error actually says is, you have either run out of space, or the backup file (.bkf) is too large for this disk. note: if the disk is formatted with FAT32, the maximum possible size for the backup file is limited to 4 gigs."

That error means that the FAT32 file system only allows 4GB files or smaller to be transfered. The chance that the backup file (.bkf) is larger than 4GB suggests that this file is causing your problems. You could try manually copying around that file (selecting all files from that folder except the large one) and see if that works.

Usually you will get many errors copying a drive directly as system files will be inaccessible and whatnot. Your best bet is to limit your copying to "C:\Program Files\" and "C:\Documents and Settings\", assuming you have Windows.
