Question about Dell 1700n Laser Printer

1 Answer

1700 printer After several attempts to finally get my new dell computer to recognize the fact that my 1700 was actually installed and the ONLY printer that was installed, my printer will not under any circumstances print anything. My compter says... yes there is a printer installed, and I do recognize it as a printer, but no , I will not print for you. What can i do. I use my computer at work and it is very frustrating not to have a printer that works.

I had no install disk, and i did download the drivers from Dell, so it should have been ok, the driver and information were installed before i turned on the printer so that isn't the problem, so frustrating. Any other solutions or suggestions. Other than contacting Dell Tech Support.... Please only as a last resort.

Yes i have tried that too. the only thing i haven't tried is throwing it out the window, or calling Dell's tech, ,,,, might be my only option.

How did you install the printer?
I have found that if you just let your computer recognise new hardware, it really has a hard time with the USB printing to the 1700's.

Originally there was a disk that came with the 1700 printer. You do want to use that.
During the install, you run the software, and then turn on the printer. (You can have the printer on during the install, but ignore the Windows Wizards that come up).
If you don't have the original 1700 install disk, you can download it from Dell.

The problem is with USB port configuration. These little 1700's are just a pain sometimes if not installed the way they were originally designed.

Here is one thing to test (it's a little strange, but it's an option).

The 1700 printers have multiple ways of connecting to your computer USB, network cable (if that option was installed) and parallel cable.

If you currently have it as USB, change it to one of the other connections.

I have run into a number of problems with the USB on these printers.

Once you can get it to communicate like that, there are some other options.

Cannot install Dell 1700 printer on Dell laptop. Laptop will not recognize the printer through the USB port.

1. check if any other usb port is working or not.
2. check if you can print through the printer or not.
3. try to reinstall the drivers from support.dell.com, select your printer model and then download the drivers for your printer.
4. if again its giving the communication failure, then the integrated circut which suport the communication from printer to computer is dead.
5. contact a local technican who can fix this
6. more economical, get another printer AIO.
7. also, check if any other USb device is getting recognised or not
8. if yes, then the problem is the printer IC.
9. if no. then we need to install the drivers for the computer chipset.
10. go to the computer manufacturer's website select your computer and thengo to drivers and download the drivers for your computer chipset.
11. if that doesnot fix you need to reinstall the operating system.
12. post another question selecting your computer model if this happens

After reinstalling windows vista home premium and microsoft works

Pushing the continue button and getting a test page just lets you know the printer is functional. This is a test without having the computer involved. If you can print a test page from the print driver, this lets you know that there is communication between the computer and the printer.

Uninstall your current drivers for the 1700, there are 2 places to look for the drivers, one would be in your all programs list, Dell Printer, uninstall, the other would be in control panel, programs and features, look for the dell printer software there. Once you have this uninstalled, go to device manager while the printer is still attached to your computer. In device manger look for the icon that represents the printer, right click it and then click uninstall. Now detach your printer, close device manager, restart your computer. Next you will boot back to the desktop, attach your printer, if windows recognizes and tries to install the printer, stop/cancel it. Install the printer drivers from the file you downloaded from the Dell support site. Now try printing from your application.

Dell's support site and download the most recent Vista drivers. Here is the link for Vista driver http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WLH&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=PRN_LSR_1700N&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=

Is my Dell 1700 Laser Printer photoconductor drum truly fried?

The drum collects used toner for apprx. 30,000 pages. After that, the printer recommends that it be changed to prevent used toner from spilling internally into the printer's mechanisms. The whole photoconducter/drum can be replaced. The new part from Dell is apprx. $50.00 US.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Printer_Accessories/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=310-8710#Overview

You might have reset the "counter" for the photoconducter. Ever  have a water  fillter with an electronic timer? You replace the filter, then you reset the timer? Perhaps you reset the timer without actually replacing the filter. So to speak. :)
The question you should ask yourself is: would I like to spend $30 - $60 [it's cheaper for refurbished parts- Google it] replacing the drum head on a 7 year old printer, or would I rather invest that in a new printer?

Canon MF 4350d Wont install

Almost the exact same problem. New 4350d Canon printer trying to connect it with Dell 8300 with XP. The computer says it does not recognize. Tried everything - reinstall drivers, download drivers, tried every USB port, swapped cables, spoke with Canon support and finally took the printer back and got a new one (Canon support person decided the USB board must be bad). New machine - same old problem.
