Those circles are there as a sign that the unit has not finished loading the indicator - it's a wait signal. This happens because the processor no longer recognizes the indicator for the shows you recorded so yes, this is a big defect.
The unit is repairable - you will have to replace the hard drive and reprogram the unit - but this is a long and costly procedure. It will be cheaper just to buy a new one.

It could be the IC101 (MR2920) and the zener D104 both failed, or IC1 (MD5001T) failed as well, here is the link where I've descrived how I fix the issue on my DVR-520H, it is in italian but you can translate it with Google: http://www.plcforum.it/f/topic/181344-riparazione-guasto-alimentatore-pioneer-dvr-520h-dvr-520h-failure/

That sounds to me like the hard drive has crashed and it can't find the required "hand shake" from the drive, hence taking such a long time to initialise and then showing rubbish. Unfortunately fitting a new hard drive to most of these machines requires matching hardware to firmware and that is achieved with the use of a "Service Remote". So fitting a replacement drive may not fix it without matching the new drive with the special remote.
If you have a Pioneer Dealer in your area, get them to estimate the repair and weigh it against the cost of a replacement.
Hope that helps.

Hi,
It seems problem with power supply board in Pioneer DVR-520H, possible causes for that symptoms are few dried up/ leaky capacitors, cold/ dry solder joints on circuit board or chip resistors would be devalued.
Local repair shop will help you to replace bad capacitors, chip resistors in power supply board to solve this issue if you are not familiar with soldering work in circuit board.
Hope these info will help you.
Let me know if you have additional question.
Thanks.

CANNOT ACCESS HARD DRIVE AFTER DVD DRIVE REPLACED

Hello Aom1908, check your wiring and drive jumper setting.
  1. If you are using IDE, check loose IDE cable, of the DVD drive and the Hard Drive. motherboard connection included.
  2. Check also the jumper at the back of the drive, one should be master and one should be slave. I prefer the hard drive master and the DVD drive slave.
  3. Check also the power connector for loose connection.
Thats all. keep me posted.

Something inside is loose, so it's time to buy a flat panel tv or spend $50 to get it repaired.

DVD shelf won't open

You know you can place a paperclip in the hole next to the DVD drive to release the door. Never just pull on the tray when it is all the way closed. Once the door is part way open you can gently pull it out the rest of the way. This will not fix anything, it just allows you to open the tray once.

Loses power after timer recording

Hi Saturn et al,
I had similar issues with my Pioneer DVR-520H. It completely went off for quite a while when it should be going to standby after a timer session. At the start it would come good after a few days. Eventually it went off altogether and nothing would bring it back.
With my father-in-law being an electronics person we investigated with the help of the service manual which I found on the net. The finger was duly pointed at the power IC (MR2920) on the power supply board (Pioneer will sell only the complete board). I ordered the IC from the UK (nikko-electronics.co.uk) GBP8.99 which was the only place I could find it online and soldered it in myself (easy, if you can solder).
All fixed and working again.
Hope this helps.
