Question about HP Compaq Presario SR1620NX (SR1620NXEG733AA) PC Desktop

2 Answers

I asked this a few days ago; , I have a Samsung SpinPoint P80 SP1604N 160 GB Hard Drive in a HP compaq presario SR 1617CL I want to replace it with a larger HD, 500GB or 1TB. Can I replace it with a Western Digital 500 GB AV PATA 7200 RPM 8 MB Cache Bulk/OEM AV Hard Drive WD5000AVJB or a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB Pata 16 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Retail Kit DrivesWDBAAV500?0ENC-NRSNby Western Digital.. Now I am trying to decide which of these HD's to purchase. I'm not sure what is the difference between 8MB cache and 16MB cache, and what difference is in two WD 500GB hard drives, Both are 7200RPM 8MB cache only one has an AV in the # . I do watch movies online and have an LCD TV connected to my computer, I don't know if this will help in choosing a HD. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The specifications I found for the computer you mention indicates that it comes with a Serial ATA-300 PCI 160 GB hard disk. Serial ATA means SATA.

The drives you are selecting to buy are PATA, that means Parallel ATA, also known as IDE. PATA hard disk connectors are not compatible with SATA connectors (unless you have both buses inside your computer. Even if you do, Serial ATA devices have a better transfer data ratio than its PATA counterparts.

Maybe you should look for hard disks with the SATA interface.

The 8 or 16 MB buffer difference also presents an increase in performance - these buffers are made of electronic memory devices that are much faster than the hard disks - they are used to store chunks of data when they are being transmitted to and from the hard disk. You see, the computer is sending lots of data to the hard disk, but it is a little slow in receiving and storing them in the disks, due to the rotation of the platters, the movement of the recording heads, the search for free space area where to record them, etc. So, these data are delivered to a faster electronic memory that receives them faster, without problems and then transmits them to the hard disk little by little, at it own pace, this way accommodating the flux of data between the slower disk and a faster computer. Logically, the more memory you have in this buffer, the better!

So a 16 MB buffer would represent a better performance, if all other characteristics are the same between two different drives.

Hope this explanation might had given you some hints for your next acquisition!

Yes, either of these drives will work. The cache is not all that important it is just where data is stored temporarily in case you have to access it again soon after a file is written to the hard drive. The best thing you could do in this case is see if your motherboard has a sata connection which I would assume it does and buy a sata hard drive. It will be much faster than either of those drives, just make sure you also get a sata power adapter if your power supply doesn't already have one and a sata cable.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test or replace all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty

Just need a samsung sp1604n driver

Any drivers needed will be on the samsung website, but unless you are using an old motherboard and windows xp (may need drivers loaded off a floppy drive) no drivers are needed.
If you are using Vista, your problem may lie in your motherboards bios, it may need an update

Lost 12GB

check the partition table, maybe their unspecified disk, delete all and recreate a new partition. Otherwise use create the remaining as a logical drive so that you will not re-installed the Operating system including the driver of your hardware
