Yes some time if you let cool down unplugged. You can get it to reengage but no promises.
But if its starts just be fast and download everything off the drive.

Most external hard drive got failure on the power chip motherboard attach to the caddy. Try this. Yes. All you have to do is to remove the hard drive to the caddy and try to connect it to your computer to recover all your data.

I have the same exact hard drive. At times, it can be detected. Sometimes, it can not.
Try to get another usb cable and wait a little longer for it to be recognized by the computer.
I waited for about 10 minutes before I can get access to my files.

My Simpletech external hard-drive fell and now is not recognized on my computer. When i turn it on the light goes on and it sounds like the disk is turning but it makes a clicking sound every second or so....

the clicking noise could either be power trying to make a connection with your hard drive

or the hard drive reader arm has been damaged and is skipping across the platters on your hard drive

make sure its getting power to the hard drive also
you could give the hard drive a firm tap to side to try to free up the reader arm then try it again

If the hard drive that has failed is the same one that you are trying to recover from might the reason that you are getting this error.

This could be an issue where the part of the hard drive you are trying to access is corrupt and not accessible which would explain the reason that it would let you access the other partition.

Now I have seen cases where Malware can break the link of a Hard Drive.

So let's try a couple of steps.

Let's go back in to "Disk Management"

Lets right click on the partition that you are not able to access and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths"

Now try selecting a new Drive Letter.

This will restore the path if it has been broken.

There are also Data Recovery programs that might be very helpful to recover your important information.

take your harddrive to someone who has a linux operating system. have them open terminal and perform a dmesg. if the linux system recognizes the harddrive, have them perform a mount. if unsucessful have them perform a foced filesystem fix. then have them attempt to mount the clean filesystem if this is a nogo, your harddrive is deader than dead. if the linux user can mount the filesystem, he or she can pull your data and save your life. if not, then uhh you lost your data im afraid.

I have a 500GB external SimpleTech HD. Tonight it

If it was running at the time it fell, the heads crashed into the platters, and the buzzing you're hearing is the dents left in the platters spinning by 7200 times a second.
Not good. Likely will need a professional service to recover the data.

Iomega external HD no longer recognized, makes weird noise.

First see if the device turns up in the Device Manager, if it does, simply uninstall it there, so Windows can re-detect it and install the drivers (again).

Did you also try a different USB port? Maybe it is the port and not the device.

And yes, you will always be able to recover the data from the disk. Inside is a hard disk like any other, so you can always open the box, take out the hard disk and plug it directly into the computer (IDE, SATA or SCSI connection).
You might need data recovery software for that, but probably not even.

In this case you should use data recovery software to try recovering the files and data, provided those lost data are not fully overwrtten.

Be careful: Before your files are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the external in case the original files are overwritten.
