If the battery is just a normal say AA battery or such, you can take them out and toss them, using gloves and eye protection. But if they are porpietary batteries this becomes more complex, and finding the right battery.

Another way is to involve either a long Q tip like what you might find at a Dr office when getting swabbed for strep throat, and some baking soda. this will help stop the corrosion but only after you have nutrelized it. you dont want fluid in the pen so dont over do it. another good read is
