Just did a kitchen remodel and my Kenmore Elite fridge stood dormant for months. Just plugged it in and I get a sound of a working fridge and lights but no cooling in the fridge or freezer after many hours

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Sounds to listen for:
1. Compressor running
2. Evaporator fan inside the freezer compartment running
3. Condenser fan running in the back of the unit near the compressor.

All three of these must be functional to get cooling.

When units sit for a long time the 2 things that have a tendency to get stuck are the Condenser fan and the Evaporator fan. Should you discover that one of these fans is not running you can try to make it turn by pushing it through. Sometimes they will snap right out of being stuck. Other times you have to lubricate the fan with a paraffin based oil such as "Zoom Spout Oiler" or Union 76 Turbine Oil. The fix of last resort for a sticking fan is fan replacement.

Should all of the fans and the compressor be running the next thing of concern is a blockage in the coolant system from internal tubing corrosion. The blockage manifests at the Freon drier near the compressor. There is a tiny capillary tube on one end of the drier that the corrosion blocks the end of the tube. When this happens you can try resting the handle of hammer against one side of it and using the HANDLE of a 2nd hammer (i.e wood) to strike the drier on the side of the capillary end but DO NOT strike the capillary itself. This will sometimes briefly clear the debris and the cooling process works normally for a while. If there is loose debris in the cooling system it will more than likely repeat the blockage. The only fix for this if it keeps repeating is to have the coolant system serviced and the drier replaced.

If you need further assistance.. I will need a complete model number to better help you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Kenmore elite refrigerator is not cooling, but the freezer seems to be working fine.

Kenmore Elite refrigerators come in several styles, including units with a freezer at the top and units with freezers at the bottom. The top and bottom of the fridge work on different systems. Sometimes the freezer may function perfectly, while the fridge performs poorly. Most issues with the fridge cooling are due to incorrect settings or poor cleaning practices. Checking common problems with the refrigerator will help you diagnose the situation and keep expensive repairs to a minimum
1. Check that the Kenmore Elite refrigerator is plugged in. Inspect the circuit breaker of the home if the refrigerator is plugged in but not running.
2. Pull the unit out from the wall and vacuum the condenser coils at the back of the unit.
3. Turn the temperature control in the Kenmore Elite refrigerator to the "On" position.
4. Turn up the temperature on the temperature control, located inside the unit on the wall.
5. Check the seal along the door for signs of cracks or dryness. If it is damaged, lift up on the seal to expose the screws that hold it in place. Loosen the screws and pull the seal off. Place a new seal on the unit, starting in the corners and working your way around to insert the tabs into the Kenmore Elite fridge door.

7. Move food away from the vents inside the Kenmore Elite refrigerator.

I hope i solve you problem.
Have a nice day : )

The condensate drain that takes the defrost water out of the fridge is blocked.
Pour some warm soapy water down the freezer drain and this may clear it
