If it was an error after the update was downloaded then the only thing I can think of is restoring the PS3 to factory settings and trying again.
Many times I got such an error it was because my connection was fickle, it would keep cutting out and not properly downloading the update and causing an error. In this case I would have to just keep restarting the update and hope it would finish.
Hope this helps.

    Are you connected to the internet wirelessly? If that is the case the connection may be 'skipping' and when for a split second, it disconnects, the download stops and there is an error. Just keep trying the download, if you see the predicted time start to go up very quickly just cancel the download and start it again.

If the power button hold doesn't work...try this...,
Take the clip out that holds the drive. Take the screw out but leave the drive inside.
When the update begins, pull your drive out. You will get an error message and it tells you to restart your system to try again. Instead, let the time run out, and your screen will go blank for about 30 seconds until it starts back up telling you that you need to reformat the drive. (If you don't get this message after 30 secs the first time, YOU HAVE TO REPEAT IT till it does. Then put your drive back in again making sure your controller is plugged in (wired in with USB) and press the PS3 button on the controller. It will then ask you to either press start and select at same time OR PS3 Button PRESS START and SELECT. Do not agree to any user agreements!! Make sure you hit cancel and it will reset to the startup screen.
* Just wondering....did you recently open your ps3?

All data lost. forgot pass error code 80023017. all this happened after 3.5 upgrade. what is the code and how do i fix it?

PS# Error 80023017

Following on from the PS3 3.50 firmware update today, we have started to hear of owners having problems logging on to their accounts.

We have heard of PS3 owners who have updated their system complaining that they cannot sign in, and every time they enter their password are getting the wrong password message. We have had customers who have two PSN accounts and cannot log into either of them. They are met with wrong password message, and even when they use "Forgot your Password" all that comes up is an error.

Conrad Zimmerman of Destructtoid is reporting that PSN is going to have some scheduled maintenance today. This could be why users are complaining of problems logging on to their accounts.

The maintenance is expected to take place during 8 am until 5pm Pacific time. There will be a lot of users who are at work during this time so it will not be a problem for them, but for everyone else it will be somewhat of an annoyance.

Playstation 3 (PS3) Console: trying to update software and keep getting the 800...

You will need an extra 2.5" HDD. use a laptop HDD.
So we all know with this error, it won't allow you to enter in the recovery menu because it would try to re-install the bad 2.8 update firmware again and again once it turned on.
1. So what I did was I swapped the laptop HDD into the PS3, it won't be able to read the HDD but it will allow you to enter the recovery menu now.
(for those who do not know how to get into the recovery menu, here is the instruction http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?message
.uid=39144801
)
2. Once I'm in the recovery menu, I took out the laptop HDD and put back in the PS3 HDD.
3. I also downloaded the 3.01 firmware from the PS website and uploaded into my USB drive and put that in the PS3 slot.
4. At this point, you want to select "system update" and update to the 3.01 version.

For some reason, the first time doing this the system froze at 67% with a new error (but i didn't write down the code). So I had repeat step 1 and 2, but this time when I put back in the PS3 HDD I chose "restore file system" without having to do the system update again. Then it gave me another error at around 65% that said the disk is corrupted and tell me to press OK to format the disk. After it formatted, it automatically install the 3.01 version and the system is fixed.

PS3 Update successful,install failed,systemrebooted,error8002F14E

On the playstation 3 site error code tool says this code is an issue updating the PS3 sytem software. Try to start with the hard drive uninstalled then try again installed. If that dont help i would format the hard drive in a laptop and see if it helps. worst casr scenario you could dissasemble the PS3 and unplug tha battery on the main board and see if that helps. Good Luck

That drive should work.

Are you sure you're not getting another message that says, "Hold the Start and Select Buttons"?

You should try downloading the latest PS3 firmware and placing it onto a usb drive, then try the above again.

That's how I usually do it.
