The main power supply filter capacitor is the problem, as the temperature rises the capacitance drops while in use and eventually the audio gets a distinctive 60 cylce audio hum. The part must be replaced in order to correct the issue.

I am experiencing the exact same problem, only the hum starts after about 5 minutes from when the reciever is turned on. I can't afford to replace it and having someone fix it is almost the same money. Where inside do I find this main power supply capacitor? Can I just buy the part from Radio Shack and swap it out? I have nothing to lose. I can't watch TV because all my equipment runs through it. Any suggestions? It is only 13 months old. Thanks.

For a unit that is 13 months old would be unlikely but possible, first check your connections to be sure it is not one of the cords going to the other devices and dis-connect each item one by one to rule them out. Next! remove the top and the bottom pan to inspect the printed circuit board for bad connections, re-touch any that look poor. There are usually one to two main filter capacitors right next to the power transformer that will need to be checked, swapping out capacitors must be done carefully and observe the polarity. I don't know if Radio Shack would sell the type of filters you are looking for, check before you remove anything and good luck.

After only 5 minutes of turning it on, My Sony STRDH800 emits a loud hum, then the word "protect" is displayed on the screen, then it shuts off. The hum is very loud and you can't turn it down...

Are you sure that's what it is? Something is heating up for sure.

It could be protecting itself because something in the volume control is going bad and sending too much current through the amp or any other reason. In other words, you can guess and buy parts hoping to nail the symptom but not knowing the cause, or you could let a technician do it.

Only solution go back for warranty if there is no answer for this solution in the user manual.
release power connector for a moment isnt the right thing tom do , this product is to young for any kind of problems, the hum is look like there is a capacitor damaged or something loose in the power supply that there failed a powerline , the only thing is back to the dealer for warranty.

Own a SONY 7.1 STR DH800 receiver, how do I fix protector message?

There could be a number of issues wrong with this unit. If you have removed all inputs and speaker outputs and the unit still goes into protect you could either have a problem with the switching power supply or a shorted output stage. Both would require a trained technician to troubleshoot and repair.

Subwoofer hum from STR-DH800

That points pretty much to a bad shield on the cable. Have you tried another one? Another thing to try is to rotate the AC power cord on the sub (if it has one). Sorry, too lazy to look it up.
