Some camcorders have the ability to see infrared. This is broadcast as a red light spectrum, but you cant see it, kind of like a rainbow but you can only see them at vertain angles. Some remote controls are this way as well. A good way to check to see if your camcorder can see infrared light is to go in total darkness. have your camcorder turned on, (or hooked up to the tv and turned on) either way so you can actually see either the view screen or the TV. Aim the remote control, (preferably not the cameras remote but rather say a dvd or tv remote) and press and hold a button. If you see the light light up say when you press the pause button on the DVD remote you should see it light up on the screen. If this is the case you can purchase an infrared light so you can shoot in the dark. If you have a full moon this will help as well. Since the light spectrums are not the same most infrared on camcorders show up as green and the blacks of your eyes glow white. On higher end camcorders they compensate for this and make it grey instead of green. But most the stuff you see at night is green.
