Computer Cabling I have a DELL Dimension 4600 PC which is about five years old. It runs on a Pentium 4 (2.8gb) CPU and contains an 80gb HD with 3gb of memory using Windows XP. The hd has about 50/50 used/free space so I have decided to purchase a new HD. Now to my problem: I recently bought a 500mg hd unit and upon openting found out that it will not support my computer which has i/o ribbon cabling. (Shame on me) So I contacted a DELL technician who informed me that many of their HDs are ribbon cabling compliant. (Shame on him) He told me of a few models they had on hand. I subsequently purchased a Western Digital 500 mg HD. Lo and behold! It does not support my PC's cabling. Is there any kind of univeresal adapter on the market that would work? Also last but not least, I also bought a Western Digial 500 Desktop HD. I had wanted it to boot up as my main HD and leave the original 80gb HD as backup. I am receiving conflicting info and whether or not this possible. I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer. Harold Estep 1280 Cloverdale Drive Clarksville, TN 37040

Ginko: If you're talking about the external Desktop HD, it came supplied with the proper USB cable.
If you're talking about my primary problem (the internal drive), your reply makes no sense.

I hope that it will be.

It sounds like you need to buy a SATA to IDE converter. They sell them at online computer shops and local shops as well. Check this out:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812156010

if you want to make that one master and convert your info over you have to buy a disk program that can do that for you.

Dell Movie Studio Plus - Video But no Sound

Make sure your audio out from the VCR goes into your sound card's IN device. Then also go into your sound properties and make sure the level is up for the Line IN. After doing that, try another record(download) and test the sound. If it still doesn't work, check Dell Movie Studio Plus' preferences see if anything about what input your using. I'm not familiar with this specific software, but related packages sometimes in preferences there are options to select different inputs. (in case you have more channels or multiple sound cards)

If you are using Windows as your OS, make sure you have the newest drivers for your dell, check for drivers here.

DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)

Hi,
Run the dell diagnostics on the sound card .
1. Restart your computer
2. tap on the f12 key slowly five times
3. select the option Boot to utility partision or diagnostics
4.select dell 32 bit diagnostics
5. Select customer test and test sound

If the test pass, try system restore , probably the problem is with the sound card drivers

if the sound test fails , shutdown the system again and remove the cmos battery and start the system without it once.Check sound again .

Thanks

I bought an All-in-One Multifunctional Converter (Coolmax CD-350-combo) to transfer my data from my non-working laptop to my new laptop. The problem is that it doesn't fit into my hard drive. My old laptop...

I have spent hours trying to figure out how this damn thing works since the instructions require the user to have way more computing skill than I. First, the thing comes apart, one part being the interface and additional power supply and the other being the power supply that may connect to the Coolmax or your HD power supply if not operational through the Coolmax. If your old HD is larger than 3.5", you may have to connect the power plug to the HD 4 pin power source. otherwise, connect old HD to the Coolmax CD 350 adapter and then connect the Support USB2.0 to a USB interface on your new computer. If your old HD is a 2.5 SATA , do not connect the red power plug to a USB2 interface on your new computer unless you are positive the old HD operates over 5V. Connecting the red USB power source to your new computers USB2 interface may cause the old HD to shoot sparks and smoke, and you will not need the device any more.

Internal HD cabling

I understood your problem there are two different connectors
SATA:

And PATA:

If your computer has IDE (PATA) connectors you need an adapter like this one:

SCSI vs. SATA vs. PCI Controllers

to use your external hard drive as boot drive you will need to set bios to boot from it if the bios allows you to
i do not know which section of the dell bios it is but it will have boot order or similar you will have to follow instruction to set it the main problem having extenal boot is windows will not install to USB devices

As for the hard drive from dell it could be a sata drive they sold you you need the standard one
Hope this helps your dilemma
